Steve Digger Mize

Stephen Roy ?Digger' Mize, 63, of Johnson City, died Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at Johnson City Medical Center of sudden cardiac arrest. He was a native of Clayton, GA, son of the late Robert Roy ?Bob' and Maude Welborn Mize. Steve was a retired paramedic with the Washington County/Johnson City Emergency Medical Services. Steve also was a funeral director and embalmer with Morris-Baker Funeral Home and also Gray Funeral Home. Steve was a special deputy with Washington County Sheriffs Office, former SWAT/Medic with Johnson City Police Department. He was a graduate of Sullivan Central High School, and Gupton-Jones Mortuary College in Atlanta, GA. Steve was a former member of the Arcana Lodge #489 F&AM, Limestone, TN. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Laura Horner Mize of the home; Mark and Dara Mize of Franklin, TN, Matthew and Allison Mize of Sunman, IN and Tim Mize of Gray, TN; a brother, John and Carolyn Mize of Blountville; two sisters, Jane and Kieth Jones of Piney Flats, Jenny and Randall Williams of Kite, GA; two granddaughters, Catherine and Elizabeth Mize of Franklin, TN; his uncle, David Mize of Clayton, GA; several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at the Grace Fellowship Church from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm. A celebration of life service will follow at 4:00 pm. under the direction of Rev. Mike Woodward, Chaplain Matthew Barber and Woody Johnson. A committal service is scheduled for Sunday, July 26, 2015 at 3:00 pm in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the Morris-Baker Funeral Home to leave in procession by 2:40pm. Active pallbearers will be: Mark, Matthew and Tim Mize, Nathan and Justin Mize and Luke Jones. Honorary pallbearers will be: past and present employees of WC/JC EMS, past and present staff of Morris-Baker Funeral Home and Gray Funeral Home and JCPD SWAT team. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: St. Jude Children?s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
