Pastor Alvis Wayne White March 7, 1947 -- October 30, 2022.
Wayne was a beloved husband, father to Angela and Candi, grandfather to Hamilton Reese Harwood, and younger brother to Maxine. As a pastor, Wayne leaves a legacy spanning 6 decades and 3 states in service of his Lord and Saviour.
Wayne was born in Atlanta, GA, to Herbert and Vaudine White. After graduating from Bob Jones University in 1969, he served as assistant pastor in Illinois and moved with his young family to Johnson City, TN, in September 1974 to serve as senior pastor for over 25 years at Boones Creek Bible Church. In 2002 Wayne was called as the first pastor at Highland Baptist Church, where he served until his retirement in November 2013. In honor of his decades of ministerial service, Tabernacle Baptist Theological Seminary bestowed an honorary doctorate to him in 1997.
Wayne was an avid tennis player who played in local leagues through June 2022. Wayne loved to travel. He and his wife Beverly took their first overseas trip in 1971. What followed were decades of family vacations; mission trips in central and South America, the Caribbean and Europe; 3 trips to Israel. In recent years, Wayne and Bev enjoyed numerous cruises, including several bucket list locations and cruise lines, with their last special voyage in July; In 2019 Wayne, Bev, his two daughters and grandson took a memorable trip to Prague, Vienna, and Budapest.
Wayne was a beloved church shepherd, pastor, and teacher. Some of his greatest joys were presiding over second generation weddings. In contrast, some of Wayne’s most difficult days were spent comforting hundreds of families in hospital rooms, nursing homes, and funerals. Wayne took great joy in serving his Father and his congregations. After retirement, he continued to speak in area churches and substitute taught at Providence Academy. In retirement Wayne and Bev attended Trinity Baptist Church, where he most recently preached in June. Wayne and Bev were active in their Sunday school class, who showed them constant loving kindness. Wayne was blessed by a visit from his Pastor Mark Harrod last week at home and in the hospital Saturday.
