Anna Mae (Vannoy) Brewer, 77, of Piney Flats, passed away October 9, 2010 at the Johnson City Medical Center. She is survived by three children and their spouses: Lisa Ann Brewer Holt and Phillip Keys Holt of Mt. Carmel, Tennessee: Van Edward and Darlene Morgan Brewer of Suffolk, Virginia; and Kenneth Vaughn and Cindy Hatfield Brewer of Shawnee, Kansas. She is also survived by one sister, Mollie R. Vannoy of Nashville, Tennessee. Surviving grandchildren, include Benjamin and Anna Kate Holt, Blake Brewer, Jacob and Sarah Brewer, Cherish and Stephen Westerfield, and Ryan Riches; and great grandchildren Indiya Morgan, and Caleb and Ivey Westerfield. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews. Special friends include Deanna Gilbert of Piney Flats, Tennessee, and Onita Topee of Richmond, Virginia. Anna Mae was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Vaughn Edward Brewer, her Father, James Hubert Vannoy, Mother T. Myrtle Vannoy, and brothers Donald Ralph and Joel Ray Vannoy. Anna Mae was born in Claiborne County, Tennessee on September 30, 1933. She married Vaughn E. Brewer on August 29, 1953, residing in Shawanee, Fountain City and Bluff City before settling in Piney Flats, TN. She graduated from Powell Valley High School in 1950 and attended Lincoln Memorial University from 1951 to 1952. She completed her B. S. in Home Economics Education at the University of Tennessee in 1953. She later completed her M. S. in Family Relationships with Vocation Educational Endorsements in 1972. Anna Mae was active in community and religious service; she was a charter and active member of the Piney Flats Baptist Church and served as pianist for many years. She served as President of the Sullivan County Democratic Women in 1975. Anna Mae taught pre-school to 12th grade in Claiborne, Knox, and Sullivan County school systems for 33 years, including the Lonesome Valley, Avoca, Mary Hughes, Bluff City and Sullivan East schools. Anna Mae was president of the Tennessee Vocational Home Economics Teachers Association from 1975 until 1977, and was honored as the 1977-78 Vocational Teacher of the Year, Sullivan County and State of Tennessee. She retired in 1990 after 33 years of service. The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 12th, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Morris '? Baker Funeral Home in Johnson City, Tennessee, followed by a memorial service from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the South Chapel of the Morris '? Baker Funeral Home. Dr. Allen Davis, Pastor of the Piney Flats Baptist Church, will conduct the service. A committal service will be held at Yoakums Chapel, Speedwell, Tennessee at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 13th, 2010. Pallbearers will be: Roger Vannoy, Ronnie Vannoy, Donnie Vannoy, Benjamin Holt, Ryan Riches and Alex Douthat.
