Anne Barwick Comfort Phillips, age 90, of Johnson City, died Monday, December 27, 2010. She was born on June 16, 1920, in Louisville, GA, the daughter of Julia and Milton Barwick. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard, her beloved son, William R. Comfort, Jr., and her siblings, M. Cook Barwick, Elizabeth Lindsey, and Dr. John Barwick. She was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church of Johnson City and the Church of the Savior, Newland, NC. Mrs. Phillips is survived by her son, The Rev. Alex Comfort, and his wife, Kippy, of Mars Hill, NC; one sister-in-law, Shirley Barwick of Jonesborough, TN; one granddaughter, Julie Raynor and her husband, Scott, of High Point, NC; one grandson, Rick Comfort and his wife, Denise, of Jackson, TN; 7 nephews, 3 nieces, 7 great-grandchildren, and many great nieces and nephews, all of whom she cherished. Anne was a towering spirit with a great faith and love of family. A woman of high standards, great humor, and strong expectations for herself and others, she had an immense will to live and a drive to get every drop out of life. She taught English and Speech at ETSU and later became a representative with Ameriprise Financial Services. The funeral service will be held at St. Johns Episcopal Church on Friday, December 31, 2010, at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:30 pm until 2:00 pm. Burial will follow the service at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Hal Hutchinson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Johns Episcopal Church, 500 N. Roan Street, Johnson City, TN 37601, or Grandfather Childrens Home, PO Box 98, Banner Elk, NC 28604.
