Bettie Lee Pyles

October 11, 1926 — January 16, 2022

Bettie Lee Bohen Pyles, age 95, of Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, January 16, 2022, at The Courtyards Senior Living in Johnson City.

Born 1926 in Junior, WV, her family soon moved to Enon, Ohio. She was good at telling wonderful stories about her school years in Enon and especially fond memories of her grandmother “Minnie”.

Her high school pal, Dovie Jean Pyles, introduced her to brother Elno (or “Ernie”, but she called him “El”). They married in 1945. She travelled the US and Europe with her husband in the U.S. Air Force, including two years at Ramey AFB in Puerto Rico and four years in England with homes in Sheringham, Norfolk, England, and nearby Sculthorpe Royal Air Force Base. Early in her marriage, she worked as a civilian employee for USAF and then spent her time as homemaker, Mother, and military wife. She resided longest in St. Charles, Missouri, where her husband worked for Federal Aviation Administration, and where she stayed after his death in 1997.

In 2016 she moved to Johnson City to be close to her daughter. She loved her many dogs, a few cats, staying in touch with her high school classmates, and enjoyed many creative arts. Her children thank her for teaching them so many things, including how to adapt to life changes and how to improvise almost anything.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee Roy and Sadie Wilt Bohen; husband, Retd. Lt. Col. Clarence Elno Pyles; beloved sister, Josephine “Jodie” Cohmer; three brothers-in-law, Boyd, Alan, and Paul Pyles; and many aunts and uncles.

She is survived by her son, Richard Alan Pyles and spouse, Kathy; daughter, Rebecca Ann Pyles and spouse, James R. Stewart; nieces, Catherine Bitner, Christy Richards, and Cherylynn Haubach; and sisters-in-law, Dovie Jean Pyles Egy and Jenny Lee Schultz.

Bettie will be interred next to her husband in Enon Cemetery, Enon Ohio; no services will take place in Johnson City.
There will be a private graveside service held in Enon.

The family would like to thank Avalon Hospice for their assistance and care, and the staff at The Courtyards, especially those staff in House 1, for the special care, attention, and compassion they provided over this past year.
