Betty "BJ" Hughes, age 66 of Johnson City, Tennessee passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family after battling IPF. She was born in Johnson City on March 12, 1958 to the late Robert and Mary Ellen Howell. BJ attended David Crockett High School, and graduated from ETSU with a degree in Nursing.
BJ's passion in nursing was caring for and being the voice of those who could not care for themselves. She worked 12 years at Sycamore Shoals Hospital in the New Leaf Unit, and she later retired from James Quillen Veterans Administration Medical Center as a psychiatric nurse. She wants to thank all of her friends and coworkers for bringing joy throughout her career.
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Howell, mother, Mary Ellen Howell, sister, Marilyn Andes, and brother-in-law, Mike Andes.
She is grieved by her daughter, Ayla (Josh) Bryant, and son, Zack (Taylor) Miller. She was a proud grandmother of Sully and Riley Miller and Matlida Bryant. She is also survived by her brother, Steve (Judy) Howell, sister, Brenda (Roger) Fillers. BJ was a very proud aunt of 6 and great-aunt of 7. Her children and family were the biggest joy of her life, and will carry her legacy for generations to come.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Monday, August 19, 2024 at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. A Celebration of her life will begin at 7:00 pm with pastor, Jeremy Dykes officiating. Special music will be provided by Pete and Max Sanders.
