Mrs. Betty Staten, 88, Johnson City, passed away Sunday, October 7, 2018 at NHC Healthcare. She was a lifetime resident of Johnson City and the daughter of the late Howard and Gladys Walker. Betty was a graduate of Science Hill High School and East Tennessee State University where she earned a B.S., M.A., and Ed.S. in Education. Betty had a long career serving in the Johnson City School System as a teacher at Stratton Elementary School, principal at Keystone Elementary School, and held several positions in administration ending her career as Assistant Superintendent. She retired in 1991. Betty was a faithful member of Central Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher and on several church committees. Prior to joining Central Baptist Church, she was an active member of Unaka Avenue Baptist Church where she held many positions including serving as the church pianist. She enjoyed participating in the Monday Club, in Delta Kappa Gamma, and was involved with the Johnson City Senior Center. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Staten. Survivors include: two sisters, Ann Kilby and Sue Meyer and her husband Delbert; three daughters, Stephanie Earhart, Suzanne Rodgers and her husband Keith, and Sheree King and her husband John; one son, Scott Staten; six grandchildren, Ashley Thornsberry and her husband Nate, Allyson Hughes and her husband Jared, Aaron Earhart and his wife Lindsay, Cassie Rodgers, Kindyl King and Kinsey Baines and her husband Ryne; five great grandchildren, Noah, Aiden and Sydney Hughes and Judson and Colton Thornsberry. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 PM on Thursday, October 11, 2018 at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. The funeral service will take place at 10 AM on Friday, October 12, 2018, also at Morris-Baker. Dr. Ron Murray, retired pastor of Central Baptist Church, will conduct the service. There will be no graveside service.
