Ms. Betty R. Whaley (Hammett) Hughes, age 88, of Johnson City, passed away Thursday, October 24, 2013, in the care of Johnson City Medical Center. Ms. Hughes was a lifelong resident of Johnson City. She was the daughter of the late Jason and Vivian Whaley. In addition to her parents, her loving husband, Rufus L. Hammett Sr.; her sons Fred L. Hammett, and Bill J Davis also preceded her in death. Ms. Hughes was a homemaker and was a very dependable hard working woman that made sure to take care of her family. Survivors include sons, Charles L. Hammett Sr. (&Jewel) and Lester Hammett; daughters Kathy (&Donald) Catherman, Mitzi (&Brad) Hammett, Ruth (&Earl) Zastrow Jr. Grandchildren, Carmuletta, Angie, and Patrick Hale, Donald Jr., Robert, and April Catherman, Chameleon Andrews, Stacey Bisek, Cage & Mitch Wilber, Phillip Zastrow, Chris & Jason Keplinger, Samuel & Sylvia Hammett, Roberta Runion, Mary Smith, James Markland, Michelle & Shannon Hammett, Beth Davis; and several great grandchildren; very great friend Veronica Hammett. The graveside service for Ms. Betty R Whaley (Hammett) Hughes will be conducted at 4:45 PM, Wednesday, October 30, 2013, in the Snyders Memorial Gardens. Pastor Lon Tobin will officiate. The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 PM Wednesday at Morris-Baker prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 9:00 PM after the service at Earl & Ruth Zastrows residence 1502 Linden Avenue, Johnson City, Tn. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at JCMC in ICU and the 5th floor for taking such good care of Betty Hughes during her last days.
