Birdie H. Garland, 80, of 2614 Browns Mill Road, Johnson City died Friday, October 31, 2008 in the Appalachian Christian Village. Mrs. Garland was a native of Buladean, NC, a former resident of Roan Mountain and had lived in Johnson City most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Roosevelt and Etta Moffitt Hughes. She was a devoted mother and homemaker to her family. Mrs. Garland attended Cove Creek School in Roan Mountain and was a former employee of North American Rayon, Elizabethton, TN and North Electric Company , Gray, TN. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by: her loving husband, Robert Samuel Garland in 1997; a sister, Barbara Hughes; three brothers, Clay Hughes, Roosevelt Hughes, Jr. and a infant brother, Cecil. Survivors include: a daughter, Marliese Garland Booshu of Johnson City; a son, Robert Michael and his wife Deborah Garland of Seymour, IN; one grandson, Noah Booshu of Johnson City; two sisters, Margie and her husband Auburn Keeter of Harrison, AR, Nada and her husband Garnie Miller of Temple, TX; three brothers, Virl and his wife Jean Hughes of Rogersville, TN, Carroll 'Jack'? Hughes of Elizabethton, and Larry Hughes of Roan Mountain; numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Birdie H. Garland will be conducted at 3 PM Monday, November 3, 2008 from the Morris-Baker Funeral Home South Chapel. Rev. Bob Edmonds will officiate. The graveside service will follow at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family will receive friends Monday, November 3, 2008 at Morris-Baker from 2:00 PM until service time. The family expresses a special thanks to the staff of Appalachian Christian Village at Sherwood for their loving care of Mrs. Garland.
