Bonnie Barrett

May 27, 1942 — March 4, 2016

?Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones. A legacy is etched into the minds of others and the stories they share about you.' ? Shannon L. Alder If stories told by us and about us are the legacy we leave, Bonnie B. Barrett, 73, of Greeneville, TN will not soon be forgotten. Bonnie passed away March 4, 2016 at Johnson City Medical Center, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the good fortune of being a part of her story. Born on May 27, 1942, in Pittsburgh, PA to parents, Philip Gale Butler and Dorothy Ober Butler, Bonnie grew up in Sandy Springs, GA with her two brothers, Robert and Philip, and lifelong friends Kip, Kathy, Mal and Tad Price. Bonnie spent more than twenty years in Dickson, TN before moving to Greeneville, TN in the early 90?s. Her passion was coaching and teaching young people. Whether it was swimming lessons at the KOA swimming pool in Dickson, coaching Little League baseball in Burns, working with seniors at the YMCA aquatics center in Greeneville, working as a certified Motor Cycle Safety Instructor, or teaching her grandchildren how to play music, Bonnie absolutely loved learning and sharing what she had learned with others. She often referred to herself as ?a jack of all trades and master of none.' Few have lived a life as full as Bonnie Barrett?s. She played professional music, competitive softball and golf, and was a shark at an assortment of card games. If score could be kept, she was ready to play. She visited all fifty states, riding motorcycles in at least forty of them. She visited over twenty national parks, ten provinces of Canada, Mexico and England. She kayaked in Costa Rica, hang glided in the Outer Banks, herded cattle in Montana, and played golf at Pebble Beach and St. Andrews. Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, Philip and Dorothy Butler. She is survived by her brothers, Robert Butler of Mahopac, NY and Philip Butler of Greeneville, TN; her children, Cathie Miller of Whitstable, UK, Robert Barrett of San Antonio, TX, and Jody Barrett of Dickson, TN; grandchildren, Ashley Barrett, JD Barrett, Brianna Alvarado, Avery Barrett, Erin Barrett and Beau Barrett; and two young men who she loved like sons, Larry Underhill of Salem, MA and Marcus Peters of Dickson, TN. A memorial service and scattering of ashes has been scheduled for Sunday, April 10, 2016, at My Turn Farm in Greeneville, TN. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in memoriam either to the HHT Foundation at http://curehht.org/donate/general/ or to the Dickson County Family YMCA at http://www.dicksoncountyfamilyymca.org/donate/.
