C. Brooks Sossomon

C. Brooks Sossomon, 97, of 1303 Sherwood Drive, Johnson City died Saturday, January 9, 2010 in the North Side Hospital. A native of Norwood, North Carolina, he had made his home in Johnson City since 1934. He was the youngest and last surviving child of the late Lewis M. and Mettie Della Joyner Sossomon. Mr. Sossomon attended Wake Forest College, Class of 1935, and retired as design engineer after more then 41 years of service with North American Rayon Corporation and Beaunit Fibers. He was a longtime member of the Central Baptist Church of Johnson City where he had served in numerous offices over many years. Mr. Sossomon was teacher of the Baraca Sunday School Class for 18 years. He served as President of the Johnson City Kiwanis Club, chairman of the Johnson City Preaching Mission, a past member of the Country Club, and several Masonic bodies. In addition to his parents, Mr. Sossomon was preceded in death by: his wife of 50 years, Alberta W. Sossomon in 2000; three sisters, Grace Louise Sossomon, Perle S. Smith, and Mrs. T.P. Crawford ; two brothers, S.J. Sossomon and Joe B. Sossomon; one sister-in-law, Carrie D. Sossomon. There are special friends, Tom and Betty Wilkinson of Johnson City, and special caregivers, Jean Blevins, Peggy Lovelace, Jeanette Calhoun, and Judy Smith. Mr. Sossomon deeply appreciated the loving care and concern that these caregivers and friends showed him on a daily basis. The funeral service for Mr. C. Brooks Sossomon will be conducted at 11 AM Tuesday, January 12, 2010 in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Dr. Ronald Murray and Dr. Janice Shelton will officiate. Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum at Monte Vista Memorial Park. There is no visitation. Active pallbearers will be Dr. Larry Denny, Phillip Young, Alan Renfro, and Steve Foxx. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Douglas Crockett, C.E. Parker, Dean Owens, Stuart Cannon, and Wallace Britton. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute to Central Baptist Church, Senior Adult Ministry, or the Music Ministry, 300 N. Roan Street, Johnson City, TN 37604
