Calvin Booth Garland

Mr. Calvin Booth Garland, 90, of Johnson City, passed away Saturday, November 25, 2017 at the Waters. Mr. Garland was a lifelong resident of Washington County, TN, born, June 16, 1927, and he was the son of the late Holden N. and Ella Mary Booth Garland. Mr. Garland graduated from Washington College Academy, attended Maryville College and graduated from East Tennessee State University with Bachelors and Masters Degrees. He was also the recipient of an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Washington College Academy. Mr. Garland served in the Pacific Theater in the Military Branch of the Navy during World War II and also participated in the repatriation of Japan that took place under the leadership of General Douglas McArthur at the end of World War II. During the 1950s he was Assistant Manager of Tri-City Towel and Linen Service, Kingsport, owner of Tri-City Uniform Service, co-owner and operator of Nite and Day Laundromat (first in Johnson City and Kingsport), and assistant manager of the Shamrock, in Johnson City during the 1960s. He was Professor Emeritus at East Tennessee State University, having taught in the College of Health for over 25 years, retiring in 1989. He was academic advisor of the College of Health and was the primary professor for First Aid, Emergency Care and Consumer Health. During his years at East Tennessee State University, he was also a member of the Royal Society of Health, the Tennessee Public Health Association, American Heart Association (Board of Directors), Washington County Civil Defense (now EMA) and Washington County Cancer Society, American Association of University Professors, Faculty Advisory for Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity, and Phi Delta Kappa Educational Fraternity. Along with other community members, Mr. Garland was instrumental in the development and implementation of the Johnson City/Washington County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the Johnson City/Washington County Hospice Program. He was listed in Who?s Who in the South and Southwest, Outstanding Educators of America, and the Dictionary of International Biography. After his retirement, Mr. Garland served as interim President of Washington College Academy, between 1999 and 2002, after having served on the Academy?s Board of Directors. His tenure as President was completely in service to his Alma Mater; he received no remuneration for his dedication to the perpetuation of the institution. Before and after retirement he enjoyed coin and antique collecting, especially clocks. He had been a member of First United Methodist Church since 1955. In addition to his parents, Mr. Garland was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Garland, Kingsport and a brother-in-law, Jack Davis, Greeneville, TN. He was also predeceased by his mother and father-in-law, Nina P. and Cecil Davis of Greeneville, TN Survivors include: the love of his and life and wife of almost 66 years, Kathleen Davis Garland of the home; daughter, Dr. Donna Garland Robbins, and son-in-law, Stephen Robbins of Limestone; brother, Donald Garland, of Hollywood, Florida; sister, Dr. H. Sue Garland Barr, and Brother-in-law, Graham Barr of Bristol, TN; and several nieces and nephews. The family of Mr. Calvin Booth Garland will receive friends from 4 to 6 PM, Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at First United Methodist Church, Johnson City. The funeral service will follow at 6 PM with the Reverend Jane Taylor officiating. Honorary Pallbearers will be men of First United Methodist Church, other friends and neighbors and family members. The graveside committal service will be conducted 11 AM Wednesday at Washington County Memory Gardens. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:50 AM Wednesday for the committal service.
