Mr. Carl Douglas ?Doug' Zimmerman, 78, of Johnson City, passed away Monday, October 1, 2018, at Johnson City Medical Center. Doug was a lifelong resident of Johnson City. He is the son of the late Earl and Sue Zimmerman. Doug graduated from University High (formerly known as Training School) in 1958, where he played basketball. He graduated from ETSU in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. While attending ETSU he played on the freshman basketball team and was in ROTC, on the rifle team. He graduated with his master?s and his EDS from ETSU. Doug served in the United States Army and United States Army Reserve for 38 years. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserve in May of 1997. He was in the 82nd Airborne. Doug was retired from Johnson City School System, where he was an Elementary Physical Education teacher for 28 years at various city schools. He also coached at Liberty Bell during the early 1980?s. Doug was very active within the community. He served as music minister at Eastside Baptist Church, Elizabethton in the 1970?s. During his younger years, he was a member of the Johnson City Barbershop. He was also a member of the East Tennessee Rail Association and Watauga Valley Chapter. He was recently awarded for being a 50-year member. Doug had a love for music and playing his trumpet. He was a member of the Johnson City Community Band where he played the trumpet and served on the board. He was in the ETSU Trumpet Ensemble. He fulfilled his dream when he performed at several ITG Conferences on the big stage as a member of the ETSU Trumpet Ensemble. He got to perform with Doc Severinsen. Doug was a member of Central Baptist Church. He served as a Deacon, Sunday School Director, and Orchestra (Selah Brass) Member. Survivors include: his wife of fifty-three years, Gail Zimmerman; two children, Renee Rush, of Johnson City, and Mark Zimmerman and wife Gina, of Gray; five grandchildren, Jordan Collins and husband Preston, Gracesyn Rush, Benji Rush, Megan Zimmerman and Avaree Zimmerman; one sister, SueAnn Schneider and husband Jack, of Sevierville; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. The family of Doug Zimmerman will receive friends from 4 PM ? 7 PM, Thursday October 4, 2018, at Central Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 7pm with Dr. Tommy Hood officiating. Active pallbearers will be: Jack Schneider, Todd Schneider, Bill Lambert, Steve Herron, David Hale, Emory Hale and George Winton. The committal service will be conducted at 1:45 PM Friday at the Mountain Home National Cemetery with military honors. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery by 1:35 PM. In lieu of flowers, family prefers donations to the Johnson City Community Band, P.O. Box 5862, Johnson City, TN 37602 or www.jcccband.org, in honor of Doug?s love for music.
