Dr. Carole Ann Williams, age 63, of 1117 Welbourne Street, Johnson City, Tennessee, died Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at the Johnson City Medical Center. The daughter of the late Joseph and Philamena Guglielmino Williams, Dr. Williams was born and raised in New Haven Connecticut. She received a BS degree in chemistry in 1969 from Albertus Magnus College, New Haven. She relocated to St. Louis Missouri where she continued her studies and joined the Department of Physiology at St. Louis University to pursue a doctoral degree. After receiving a PhD in 1977, Dr. Williams remained at St. Louis University as a postdoctoral fellow, rising to the rank of Assistant Research Professor in 1980. Later in 1980, Dr. Williams joined the Department of Physiology at the Quillen College of Medicine. She was a passionate and dedicated educator of graduate students and medical students. She directed the medical physiology course (1987-1993) and has received numerous awards and recognitions for the quality of her teaching. These include Best Lecturer of the Year Award from the class of 1991, Exceptional Medical Educator from the class of 1992, Teacher of the Year Award from the class of 1999, and induction as an inaugural member of the Scarlet Sash Society by the class of 2004. Dr. Williams has been an active supporter of the American Heart Association. She has served on state, regional and national research peer review committees and served on the Board of Directors of the Washington County Chapter of the Tennessee Affiliate of the AHA. In recognition of all her efforts, she was elected as a Fellow of the American Heart Association in 1998. Her alma mater, Albertus Magnus College, also named her as Alumni of the Year for Outstanding Professional Achievement in 2004. Dr. Williams was also known to enjoy a round of golf and was a member of the Elizabethton Womens Golf Association. She also loved rooting for the New York Yankees and was an avid and accomplished photographer. Dr Williams is survived by one sister, Rose Mary Appicelli of Hamden, Connecticut and one brother, Cosmo Williams of New Haven, Connecticut; two nieces, Phyllis R. Brighindi of Huntington, Connecticut, and Joanne E. Cannon and husband John of Hamden, Connecticut; one nephew, Frank A. Appicelli and wife Lori of Northford, Connecticut. Also surviving are five great nieces and two great nephews: Amanda and Hannah Brighindi, Alexis and Allie Appicelli, Kaitlyn Cannon, Joseph Appicelli and James Cannon. Several cousins and second cousins also survive. The family wishes to express special thanks to the hospital staff of Johnson City Medical Center, to Dr. Julie Dunn, to Dr. Ken Olive, to the Wound Care Nursing Staff and to the many dear friends who cared for her in so many ways! A Memorial Mass of the Resurrection will be held at St. Marys Catholic Church in Johnson City, Tennessee on Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 11 AM.
