Charles Edward Shook

Charles Edward Shook, 90, of 1308 E. Chilhowie Avenue, Johnson City passed away from this life into the presence of his Heavenly Father on Saturday, July 12, 2008 in the James H. Quillen VAMC at Mountain Home. He was born April 9, 1918 in Dante, VA but later moved to Heaton, NC where he spent his boyhood. He was the son of the late Hardy and Flora Shomaker Shook. Mr. Shook attended Heaton Elementary School and graduated from the Cranberry High School in 1937. He attended Appalachian State Teachers College for one year. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Della Carendar Shook in 1994, a brother, Jack Shook and a sister, Margaret Shook. He is survived by his wife Etta Sue Fields Shook of the home; a nephew Freddie Shook of Calhoun, GA and several cousins. Charles was a born again Christian and a active member of the Unaka Avenue Baptist Church since 1952. He was a faithful servant of God and his church. He served in various positions that include deacon, Sunday School teacher, Training Union Director, usher, numerous committees and began the church tape ministry. He was also honored as Deacon Emeritus. Mr. Shook was a machinist by trade. During his career he was employed by Accurate Machine Shop, Sperry, Raytheon, North American Rayon, where he was machine shop foreman and retired from the Johnson City Foundry in 1982. Mr. Shook served his country in the United States Army from 1938 to 1945 and was a veteran of WW II. He served in North Africa and Italy. He was awarded a Purple Heart, three Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medals, and an American Defense Service Medal. He was also a member of the Watauga Masonic Lodge # 622 F and AM of Watauga, TN and the Thomas E. Matson, Chapter 131 of Johnson City and the Holston Council # 101. The funeral service for Charles Edward Shook will be conducted at 8 PM Monday, July 14, 2008 in the Unaka Avenue Baptist Church. The service will begin with a Masonic Service then the Funeral Service. Rev. Mike Tyson and Rev. Steve Witt will officiate. The graveside service will be conducted at 1 PM Tuesday in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Full Military Honors will be accorded at the graveside by V.F.W. Post 3382 of Kingsport and the Tennessee National Guard. Everyone will meet at Morris-Baker at 12:30 PM Tuesday to go in procession to the cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Thomas Dismukes, Jerry Lambert, Jack Lowe, David Carper, David Bacon, Rusty Stover, and Bob Vines. Honorary pallbearers will be C.J. Campbell, Hal Miller, J.D. Hoover, Lonnie Laws, Richard Mettler, and Webb Schwartz. The family will receive friends at Unaka Avenue Baptist Church from 6 to 8 PM Monday, prior to the service.
