Charles Howard Story

Dr. Charles H. Story, died Friday, July 1, 2011 at his residence at Piney Flats, Tennessee. He was born May 21, 1939 in Murray, KY the son of the late Jesse Bryan and Eron Desiree Howard Story. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William Bryan Story. Dr. Story received a B.S. degree from Murray State University and, while a student there, was selected for Whos Who among Students in art and industrial technology. He was named Distinguished Alumnus in 1979. He served as a First Lieutenant for two years in the U.S. Army. He received a M.S.Ed. from Southern University and an Ed.D. from Texas A & M University. Dr. Story joined the faculty at East Tennessee State University in 1965 and became chair of the Department of Industrial Education in 1979. He was associate dean of the School of Applied Science and Technology from 1984 to 1987. He was an emeritus professor in the Department of Engineering Technology, Surveying and Digital Media. Besides workshops, Dr. Story was one of 20 scientists and educators selected nationally to conduct a systems study of future airstrips for NASA at the Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas in 1975. The following year, he was named the study manager of the institute to study transportation options for NASA in their proposed Solar Satellite Power Systems. In 1983, he was named to the staff of the National Congress on Aerospace Education. In 1994, he served as Chief of Staff for their convention in Norfolk, VA. One of his proudest moments came at The Year 2000 NCASE Convention when he received the Crown Circle Award for excellence in aerospace education, their highest honor. He has also been active in the Civil Air Patrol, an Air Force Auxiliary involved in numerous flight activities including aerospace education. In 1989, he was appointed to the 27 member National Aerospace Education by the Air Force. He was also named national director for the 1990 Aerospace Education Leadership Development conference held at MTSU, and for the 1991 session at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. Within the state of Tennessee, he is on the Board of Visitors for the Warbirds Museum in Sevierville. With the advent of the Space Shuttle in 1986, he presented several 'Pre-Launch Seminars'? in Florida for NASA before three Space Shuttle launches. He attended the first Space Shuttle launch and several launches since that time. He had planned to attend the last Space Shuttle launch on July 8, 2011. In 1983, he was named Regional Resource Person for Smithsonians Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC. In this volunteer role, he gave lectures in several states, and contributed to the museums educational exhibits and resource materials. Dr. Story was also active in community affairs. He was former president and Paul Harris Fellow of the Johnson City Rotary Club, Salvation Army, Advisory Board Member and Board Chairman, United Way representative, and many others. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Johnson City where he served in numerous leadership positions including Board Chairman for five years and Lay Leader. In 1988, Johnson City named him Outstanding Volunteer for his work with the Salvation Army and his involvement in establishing a domestic violence center for battered women. He is survived by his wife, Judy Crackel Story, of the home; his daughter and husband, Heather and Tony Woodall; one son and his wife, Todd and Kim Story; four grandsons; Austin and Tyler Woodall and Cameron and Tanner Story. The family will receive friends Monday, July 4, 2011 at Morris-Baker Funeral Home from 5-7 PM. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at 11 AM at First United Methodist Church, Johnson City with Reverend Tim Bracken officiating assisted by Garland Thayer. Mrs. Susan Fields will provide the special music. A committal service will be conducted on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Boone Dam VFW and the Tennessee National Guard. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the cemetery. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
