Charles Smith

November 26, 1933 — January 2, 2016

Charles B. Smith, 82, Johnson City, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 2, 2016 at JCMC after a lengthy illness. He was the son of the late William B. and Ruth Conner Smith. Charles was a U.S. Navy Veteran and had served on the USS Newport News. United Cities-Atmos Gas Company employed Charles for a total of 33 years. He continued doing work on his own after retiring from the company. Charles was a longtime member of Grace Baptist Church. He was a member of the choir and also the shut-in visitation ministry. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: one sister, Jeanette Jilton; an infant grandson, Kash Smith; and an infant granddaughter, Avery Smith. Survivors include: his wife of 53 years, Charlotte Patterson Smith; three sons, Paul, Aaron and Kevin Smith; one daughter-in-law, Tiffany Smith; two grandsons, Alec and Brendan; three granddaughters, Kennedy, Isabella and Maddie; one brother, Tom Smith, of Johnson City; one sister, Charlotte Wilson, of Knoxville; one brother-in-law, B.J. Jilton; and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the nursing staff and doctors at JCMC, floor 6400, for their love and support. A very special thanks for all the help and compassion shown by our friend Leota Letterman. The family of Charles Smith will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Thursday, January 7, 2016 at Morris-Baker. The funeral service will follow at 7:00 PM with Kevin Smith delivering the eulogy. Pallbearers will be sons, grandsons and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Grace Baptist Church. Family and friends are asked to meet at Philadelphia Community Cemetery in Limestone, TN Friday, January 8, 2016 for 10:00 AM graveside services. In lieu of flowers, the family would like memorials to be made to Grace Baptist Church, 612 Collins Dr., Johnson City, TN 37604, or to Gideons International, 609 E Elk Ave., Elizabethton, TN 37643.
