Mr. Charles W. Mayes, 83, of Johnson City, passed away Thursday, October 19, 2017, at his home. Mr. Mayes was a lifelong resident of East Tennessee. He was the son of the late Hubert and Grace McDaniel Mayes. Mr. Mayes loved watching UT football games and westerns. He enjoyed coaching his kids in sports and going to the beach with his family. He retired after 35 years of service at Holston Defense. He was a proud member of the US Army and served in the Korean War. He was a member of Fountain of Life Bible Church. In addition to his parents, Mr. Mayes was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Jewell Mayes; two sons, Jeff Mayes and baby Anthony Wade Mayes; one daughter, Teresa Archer; three sisters, Mary Morgan, Beulah Horner, and Estelle Human; four brothers, Junior Mayes, James Mayes, Sam Mayes, and Gene Mayes. Survivors include his fianc? of seven years, Betty Malone; one daughter, Rachel Swoboda and her husband Howard; one grandson, Joshua Aaron Archer and his wife Jenny; one granddaughter, Ashley Murguia Lopez and her husband Oscar; one daughter-in-law, Sonya Mayes; one son-in-law, John D. Archer; special niece, Connie Dennison Wilson; five great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. The family of Mr. Charles W. Mayes will have a graveside committal service at 2 PM Monday, October 23, 2017 and will be conducted at Washington County Memory Gardens Mausoleum with Dr. Matthew Young officiating.
