Mrs. Charlotte Smith Daniel Bowers, age 104, of Academy Hill, Jonesborough, Tennessee passed away Sunday morning, April 5, 2009, at her home. Born in Upatoi, GA on October 4, 1904, Charlotte grew up in Forsyth, GA. She attended Georgia Womens College, Valdosta, and business school. Before her marriage she worked in Atlanta as a banking secretary and lastly for architect Henry J. Toombs. After her marriage to Charles L. Bowers in 1938, her home was in the Atlanta area and she was thereafter a homemaker. Mr. and Mrs. Bowers lived in Hapeville, GA for 37 years then moved to Jonesborough in 1980 to be near their daughter and her family.Mrs. Bowers was the daughter of the late Effie Smith and Charles Duke Daniel. Also preceding her in death were her husband, Charles L. Bowers, in 1988; an infant son, Paul; infant siblings Paul and Virginia Daniel; sisters Nell Daniel, Miriam Wylie Daniel Slack, and Jewel Daniel Barney; brothers Thomas Duke Daniel, Wesley B. Daniel, Allen L. Daniel, and John Stanley Daniel; a dear niece, like a sister to her, Louise Slack Sibold, in 2008. She was a granddaughter of Pvt. John Franklin Smith of the Georgia Sharpshooters, C.S.A. Charlotte bore his name Smith as her middle name and was called 'Smithie'? by her family. She is also survived by nephews Oscar R. Barney, Jr., Augusta, GA; Thomas Daniel, Palm Bay, FL; Wayne Daniel, North Carolina; Stewart Daniel; and Michael Daniel, Fayetteville, GA and niece Charlotte Daniel Darnell, Fayetteville, GA, and their families.Charlotte was a good and most devoted wife, mother and grandmother, a delightful Southern lady enjoyed by all who knew her. After a lifetime in the Methodist Church, she was baptized in her 84th year into the Baptist Church by Dr. David Crocker and became a member of Central Baptist Church with the Kennedys in Johnson City. She is survived by her daughter Virginia Bowers Kennedy and her husband, Dr. William E. Kennedy (Bill), truly a son to her, and grandsons Dr. Charles Mark Kennedy of Birmingham, Alabama and Paul Russell Kennedy of Brooklyn, New York.The family will receive friends at Central Baptist Church on Monday, April 13, 2009, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The celebration of life service will follow in the sanctuary at 1:00 with Dr. Ronald Murray, pastor, officiating and assisted by Dr. David W. Crocker and Rev. R. Willard Warfield . Rev. Tony Martin will lead congregational singing and Dr. Charles Kennedy will be the organist. Active pallbearers will be Tony Street, Kenneth Willingham, Bill Russell, Jim Rhein, David Horton, and David HowardHonorary pallbearers will be Bill McCollum and Donald Courliss. Burial will follow immediately afterward at Maple Lawn Cemetery in Jonesborough. The Kennedy family especially thanks Mrs. Bowers kind and devoted caregivers over the past several years: Anna Hughes, Beverly Ritli, and Marlene Gillette.
