Chester M Payne

June 5, 1918 — December 28, 2008

Chester M. Payne, 90, of 3422 Greenwood Drive, Johnson City died Sunday morning, December 28, 2008 at his residence. Mr. Payne was a native of Asheville, NC and had lived most of his life in Washington County, TN and was a son of the late Guy and Zella Elliott Payne. Mr. Payne was a former employee of J.E Greene Construction Company and later owned and operated The General Services Company in Kingsport. He was a Master Mason and a member of the Greenwood Baptist Church. Mr. Payne was a U.S. Army veteran of WW II and earned the EAME Theater Ribbon with one Bronze Star; the Good Conduct Medal; the Victory Medal WWII and a Purple Heart Medal. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by: his wife, Louise Huff Payne in August 2007; two sisters, Grace Lawson and Pearl Wykle; five brothers, Hugh Payne, Roby Payne, Stacy Payne, Dewey Payne and Joe Payne. Survivors include: one daughter Judy P. and her husband, Bobby Roller of Johnson City; one son, Raymond C. and his wife Shirley Payne of Johnson City; one brother, Travis Payne, VA; six grandchildren, Wesley D. Roller, Michael A. Roller, Mary E. Stoneman, Cindy H. Burnett and her husband, Gary, Christopher R.M. Payne, and Jamie J. Payne; six great-grandchildren, Casey M. Dalton, Jamey L. Bradley, Chancey Stoneman, Laney Stoneman, Kelsey M. Payne, and Emilee Payne and several nieces and nephews. The family expresses a special thanks to a loyal and trusted employee, Pat Hammonds. The funeral service for Chester M. Payne will be conducted at 7:30 PM Tuesday, December 30, 2008 in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Pastor Harold McNabb will officiate. Music will be provided by Pastor McNabb. The family will receive friends at Morris-Baker from 6 to 7:30 PM Tuesday prior to the service. A military honors graveside service will be conducted at 10 AM Wednesday in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Everyone will meet at Morris-Baker at 9:30 PM Wednesday to go to the cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Jamie Payne, Chris Payne, Wesley Roller, Gary Burnett, Dennis Payne and Bob Huff.
