Christa Ingrid Thyson Hungate of Johnson City died Thursday, November 27, 2008 at her home. She was a native of Kaiserslautern, Germany and was a daughter of Walter and Wilhelmine Thyson. Mrs. Hungate was educated in Germany and also studied in France and attended Cambridge University in England. She received degrees from the University of Alabama in Birmingham and the University of Northern Iowa. She was the German Professor at East Tennessee State University for twenty-eight years. During that time, she received two outstanding teaching awards. Her passion for teaching was evident in her dedication to her students. Many students enjoyed her Summer Study Programs in Germany and Austria. Professor Hungate was a Fellow and past president of the Tennessee Philological Association, a state- wide organization of scholars and teachers of foreign languages and English. She is survived by Douglas Hungate; her son, Robert Hungate and wife Vickie; her daughter, Melanie Rames and husband Jay; two grandsons, Robert and Skylar; her sister, Karin Muller; her aunt, Gertrude Raab; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at St. Johns Episcopal Church on Tuesday, December 2, 2008 from 6 to 8 PM. A Celebration of Christa Hungates Life will be held at St. Johns Episcopal Church on Saturday, December 13, 2008 at 11 AM.
