Sergeant Daniel James Currin

July 30, 1988 — April 16, 2025

Johnson City, Tennessee

Sergeant Daniel James Currin, 36, of Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away on April 16, 2025, surrounded by family, holding his hand as he went to be with the Lord. Daniel was a devoted father, son, and brother. Daniel was a Marine through and through, deeply committed to the brothers and sisters he served alongside.

Born on July 30, 1988, in Kingsport, Tennessee, Daniel was the son of Sherri and Mark Currin. He graduated from Science Hill High School in 2006 and joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 2007. During his service, he was deployed to Afghanistan as part of VMU-2 "Night Owls," where he operated UAVs.

After his military service, Daniel continued his mission to serve others. For the past seven years, he worked with We Got Your 6 (WGY6), a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing veteran suicide. Known affectionately as “Hammer,” Daniel brought boundless kindness, fierce compassion, and unwavering dedication to the cause.

Dan joined WGY6 in 2013, bringing a bold, unfiltered spirit and a deeply rooted drive to make a difference. Though some questioned whether he would fit in, his potential was undeniable. He accepted the challenge to grow—facing himself before helping others—and emerged as a powerful force for good, impacting thousands of lives.

As the night team lead of the WGY6 Crisis Squad, Dan’s sharp intellect and unmatched skills in locating those in crisis made him a lifeline to many. He and his team responded around the clock, tracking down veterans in need across the world, directly intervening in hundreds of cases and contributing to saving countless lives.

Beyond crisis response, Dan was a mentor and trainer, instilling his high standards and deep compassion in the next generation of operators. He often played the “bad cop” behind the scenes—steady, honest, and unafraid to be the strength others leaned on when kindness alone wasn’t enough.

His legacy lives not only in the lives he helped save, but also in the teammates he empowered, the friends he supported, and the organizations he strengthened. He was the hammer that helped build a house of hope—and his absence leaves a silence that echoes in the hearts of all who knew him.

Outside his service, Daniel loved camping, hiking, and cooking. He was especially known for his chili, a favorite among his friends. After his military service, he was accompanied by his beloved service dog, Luke. After Luke passed, Daniel never found another to take his place.

Daniel is survived by his parents, Sherri and Mark Currin; his brother, Mark Currin Jr.; and his cherished son, Damian J. Currin. He also leaves behind his maternal grandparents, Norman Claypool (Marge) and Nana Janet Day.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Richard and Martha Currin, and maternal great-grandmother, Rosalie Stutz.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the ICU nurses and doctors at Mountain Home VA for their compassionate care and support during this difficult time.

Daniel’s family will receive visitors from 5:00-7:00 pm, on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home, with a memorial service immediately following at 7:00 pm.
