Deborah Lee Carter—mother, wife, sister, daughter, granddaughter—slipped the bonds of this fallen world and entered the blessed gates of heaven with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 19, 2024. Mrs. Carter was 69 years old. She was born to Edward and Constance Hart on March 19, 1955, in Sacramento, California. She spent her childhood in Sacramento, San Francisco, and Denver, Colorado. The eldest of four children she had three siblings: Scott Hart (1957-1979), Steve Hart (1957-2004), and Pamela Duarte (1961 -present).

In December 1975, she married Joseph Carter, a Vietnam War veteran and serviceman in the U.S. Air Force. Both completed their studies at Sacramento State (CSU Sacramento). Her marriage lasted more than 48 and 1/2 years. Mrs. Carter and her husband had three loving children: Daryl A. Carter, Ph.D. (Crystal), Stephanie D. Day, M.S.W. (Joseph), and Lisa A. Carter, MD. She was a spirited, adventurous, and religious woman. Her first love was God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. Her second love was her family. She was devoted to them and took great pride in their accomplishments.

Mrs. Carter was incredibly curious about a wide variety of things in life. She was a student of Judaism. She was passionate about travel. Food—steak, lobster, and Mexican, just to name a few—was a favorite pastime of hers. The various troubles this nation has experienced since 2016 greatly alarmed her and she spent countless hours discussing, debating, and strategizing on how this country could survive and move past the sons of disobedience. To that end she warned of the dangers of hate, especially racism, sexism, and anti-Semitism. Throughout her life, she was a vigorous advocate for women and girls. Through her own powerful example and through compelling instruction, she taught her son and daughters the importance of equality and equity for women. She took great pleasure in watching her children and grandchildren grow up. Equally important, she greatly enjoyed giving her husband “the business.”

The survivors of Mrs. Deborah Lee Carter are her husband Joseph Carter, her son Daryl  A. Carter, Ph.D., her daughter Stephanie D. Day, M.S. W., her daughter Lisa A. Carter, MD, her grandson Maxwell A. Carter, her grandson Isaiah Day, her granddaughter Gracie Carter, her granddaughter Mya Day, her daughter-in-law Crystal Carter, and her son-in-law Joe Day.

The Carters will receive family and friends at Morris-Baker Funeral Home from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, with the funeral service to begin at 12:00 pm following the visitation. 

 The entombment of Mrs. Carter in the mausoleum will follow the funeral service on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at Monte Vista Memorial Park at 1900 E. Oakland Ave., Johnson City, Tennessee, 37601.

The Carter family asks for meaningful donations in the name of Deborah Lee Carter, in lieu of flowers, go to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
