Dorothy Thorp passed away on July 6, 2010 at Johnson City Medical Center. She was born in War, West Virginia on February 21, 1922. Dorothy was married to Nathan Thorp and she had four children. Mrs. Thorps further education began at Stephens College, Columbia, Missouri with an A.A. degree, followed with a B.A. degree, majoring in secondary teaching from George Peabody College, Nashville, TN, and later she obtained her M.A. (major curriculum and teaching of childhood education) from Columbia University, New York City. Although a teacher by profession, Mrs. Thorp was a civic and educational leader and amongst her many offices she has been chairman of Johnson City Beautification Committee, 1960-62, secretary and public chairman, Johnson City Council of Garden Clubs, 1958-64, regional chairman for United Way Fund, 1956, regional chairman for March of Dimes, 1959, campaign manager for Democratic Womens Division for Estes Kefauver, 1960, and chairman of the Educational Department of the Monday Club, 1968. In addition she was chairman of the International Relations Committee, American Association of University Women, 1962, and membership chairman, 1960, member of the first board of directors of the Friends of Carroll Reece Museum at its inception circa 1968, president of the Hoe and Hope Garden Club, 1963, and member of the Preservation of the Southeastern Region Board of Anti-Defamation League of Bnai Brith, Atlanta, Georgia since 1958. Mrs. Thorps other positions included chairman and founder of the Friends of Johnson City Community Theatre, 1974-75; chairman of the Beautification Committee of the Womens Division of the Chamber of Commerce and also member of the Educational and Nominating Committees, 1973-75; delegate to the Southeastern Regional Conference, Womens Division, Chamber of Commerce, Louisville, 1974; patron of the Committee for the Tennessee Performing Arts; patron of the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra; member of the Wednesday Morning Music Club, 1974-75; secretary of Foundation and Corporate Aid for Steed College, 1974-75; and member of Bnai Sholom Congregation Sisterhood, 1974-75. Dorothy S. Thorp was listed in 'Whos Who of American Women,'? 'Whos Who in the South and Southwest'?, 'World Whos Who in Commerce and Industry'?, 'Community Leaders of America'?, 'National Register of Prominent Americans'?, '2000 Women of Achievement'?, 'Dictionary of International Biography'?, 'World Whos Who of Women'?, 'National Social Directory'?, and 'Whos Who in the United States'?. In her middle to later years, she continued to champion the arts and humanitarian causes, animal rights, environmental protection and Veterans of Foreign Affairs. From 2000-2010, Dorothy was consultant and sponsor of Music4Games, championing music and the interactive arts. She is survived by her son, Richard Thorp; daughter, Barbara Lady; son-in-law Michael Lady; son, Julian Thorp; daughter, Valerie Vickers; son-in-law Greg OConnor-Read; granddaughter, Natalie Jones, her husband Jeremy Jones; and great-grand daughter, Georgia Jones. Visitation will be held on Monday, July 12, 2010 from 6-8 PM at Morris Baker Funeral Home. A graveside service will be conducted at 1 PM on Tuesday, July13th, Rev. Bob Edmonds will officiate. A procession will be commencing at 12:45 PM at Morris Baker. The family would like to thank Shannon Greene, caregivers Tierah, Jill, Dustin, Erick, Lisa, Elizabeth, Pam, Hannah, nurses Rita and Angela, and all the compassionate staff at The Courtyard of Johnson City.
