Doug Gourley

August 15, 1945 — September 4, 2019

Douglas (Doug) B. Gourley, age 74, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 4, 2019, surrounded by his loving family.
Doug was born in Dickenson County, VA, and was the son of the late Blanche Jones (Jack). Doug lived with his grandfather, Howard Gourley, until the age of 10 when he returned to Johnson City. Doug served in the U.S. Army 173rd Airborne Brigade and fought in the Vietnam War where he was wounded in combat and received The Purple Heart Medal. For 40 years, he worked at Gordon’s/Thomasville Furniture and the VA, retiring in 2008.
Doug loved the Lord with all of his heart and served as a deacon at The Living Word Baptist Church. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend who lived his life with the principles of integrity, hard work, and love.
Left to cherish Doug’s memory is the love of his life of 50 wonderful years, Linda Gourley. He is also survived by his two children and daughter-in-law; his son, Aaron and wife Sara Gourley of Kingsport, and his daughter Jessica Gourley of Jonesborough. Doug also had one beloved grandson, Paxton Gourley.
Doug grew up in a family with 9 siblings who are also left to cherish his memory: Sue Marley (Mike Zulinski) , Larry Jones (Dot), Harold Jones (Georgia), Rena Willis (Jim), Palmer Jones (Shirley), Tammy Yelton, Lori Trent (Allen), Vonda Stout (Mark), and Orben Jones (Barbara). In addition to his immediate family, Doug will also be cherished by his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Sammy Garland, Bobby and Pat Church, the late Richard and Lola Church, and Lynn Church (Connie). The extended family includes Bill Head, the late Debbie Head, Godson Josh Head (wife Kim and children Kalie and Caleb), and adopted granddaughter Mackenzie Robinette.
A special thank you to the Johnson City Medical Center Staff. Words cannot express how the nurses in the ICU, 5200/5300 wings, the Surgery Team, Johnson City Internal Medicine, Dr. Paula Smith, Nurse Judy Gogan, and Nurse Jill took extraordinary care of Doug during his hospital stay. We are forever grateful.
