Dwight W. Lambe Jr., 88, of Johnson City, passed away on February 28, 2019 at his residence. He was born on May 17, 1930, in Okeechobee, Florida. Dwight?s mother, Maymie Boring Lambe, died in childbirth. Raised primarily by his grandparents, John M. and Mamie Ross Boring, and an aunt, Esther Brown Boring, Dwight grew up in a very loving and devoted family. Dwight graduated from Fort Myers High School (1948) and from Florida State University with a BS (1953) and an MS (1957). He holds a PhD in medical microbiology with a focus on infectious diseases from Wayne State University College of Medicine (1966) and served in the Army from 1954 to 1956. He married Greta Paula Bogren, originally from Sweden, on August 10, 1964 in St. Phillips Cathedral in Atlanta, GA. Dwight held a long career as a professor, working for Emory and Harvard before finishing his career at ETSU as Chair of the Microbiology Department. Dr. Lambe?s research interests included anaerobic bacterial infections, osteomyelitis, and diabetic foot infections, especially those caused by anaerobic bacteria and Staphylococcus. He also found an antibiotic that cures osteomyelitis and diabetic foot infections. His infections research earned him invitations to speak at symposia and meetings in the United States, France, Germany, England, Sweden, Denmark, Italy, Czech Republic, Russia, Poland, Slovakia, Norway, Finland, Egypt, Philippines, Japan, Hong Kong, Belgium, Portugal, and Spain. He sponsored the First International Symposium on Anaerobia Bacteria and Anaerobic Bacterial Infections at ETSU in 1979 and published a book as a result of the event. He authored many articles and book chapters as well as served as editor of The European Journal of Clinical Microbiology. In his retirement, he served as ETSU?s Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs. Active in community service, Dwight served on the Johnson City Symphony Board as well as Friends of Music, ETSU. He and Paula were great supporters of the arts. They were patrons of the Highlands Playhouse and the Metropolitan Opera and sponsored many fundraising events for music organizations in Johnson City. Dwight was a former member of the St. Johns Episcopal Church and a current member of St. Christopher?s Episcopal Church, Kingsport. His hobbies included photography, gourmet cooking, travel, and gardening. He specialized in Ikebana (the Japanese art of flower arranging), studying with several grand masters, becoming a member of the South Eastern Society of Ikebana, and giving lesssons in Johnson City. His good friends include: Ron Hambdy, MD, Clarence Spannuth, MD, Mark Williams, MD, Bedford and Carol Transou, Judy Cancellaro and her children, and Jill Hunt, all of the Johnson City area; June Mindrup (Atlanta, GA); Cindy and Hulan Whitehead (Duendin, FL); Jim Toy (Ann Arbor, MI); Dr. Madelaine Sebald (Paris France); Drs. Jerome and Marie-Claude Etienne (Lyon, France); Dr. Jean-Paul and Mrs. Rolande Butzler (Knokke, Belgium); and a special friend, Dr. Petr Petras (Prague, Czech Republic). Dwight and Paula spent 35 years happily married until she passed away in 2009 after a long illness. Dwight never got over losing Paula. He is also preceded in death by his parents and stepmother; half-brother, Joe Lovick Lambe; and several family pet schnauzers. He is survived by: cousins Marion and Parker Albee (Portland, ME); CC Brewer III and Betsy Brewer (Raleigh, NC); and Clay and David Walkup (Tampa, FL). He is also survived by cousins in Boras and Gothenburg, Sweden, as well as nieces and nephews in Sweden, and his precious schnauzer, Dolly. A memorial service for Dr. Lambe will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 16, 2019 in the Morris-Baker Dogwood Chapel. The Reverend Margaret Zeller will officiate, and the Reverend Bedford Transou will deliver the homily. Following the service, Dr. Lambe will be laid to rest in Monte Vista Memorial Park, Johnson City. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made in Dr. Lambe?s name to the Alzheimers Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.
