Edna Pearl Birchfield

August 8, 1929 — May 23, 2008

Edna Pearl Casteel Birchfield, age 78, passed away May 23 at North Side Hospital following a brief illness. A native of Virginia, she lived most of her life in Johnson City. She was the daughter of the late Mary M. Johnson Casteel and Luther V. Casteel. She was a faithful member of King Springs Baptist Church for many years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Wilbur Lee Johnson, Bud Casteel, Hank Casteel, and a sister, Betty Casteel. Survivors include her husband, John H. Birchfield, of the home, daughters, Mary Riddle, Johnson City, Polly and Mike Hughes, Telford. Grandchildren, Scott and Donna Riddle, Jonesborough, Lori and Ben Clark, Mathews, N.C., Aimee Riddle, Jefferson City, and Jenni Hughes, Johnson City. She was also blessed with three great grandchildren, T.J. Riddle, Jacob Riddle and Emily Clark. God also gave her a very special sister and brother-in-law, Delores and Douglas Hammitt. She always said they were more than family, they were friends. The family would also like to offer a very special thanks to her caring friend, Carol Creech. Funeral services for Mrs. Birchfield will be conducted Tuesday, May 27 at 8:00 PM at Morris-Baker Funeral Home South Chapel. Rev. Mike Pelham will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 until 8 PM Tuesday. Graveside services and burial will be Wednesday at 1:00 PM at Monte Vista Burial Park. Friends and family are invited to meet at the funeral home at 12:30 PM to go in procession to the cemetery. Pallbearers will be Michael Hughes, Scott Riddle, Douglas Hammitt, Tommy Garst, Martin Garst, and Paul Bailey. Honorary pallbearers will be T.J. Riddle and Jacob Riddle.
