Elayne Laws Trent

Mrs. Elayne Laws Trent, 84, of Johnson City, passed away Thursday, May 12, 2016, at the home she shared with her husband, Johnny Howard Trent. Elayne was born in Hartford, Tennessee. She lived much of her life in Morristown, Tennessee before moving to Johnson City in 1997. She was the daughter of the late Roy Allen Laws and Viola Hall Laws. Elayne graduated from Cocke County High School. She attended David Lipscomb College in Nashville for three years and gained her teaching certificate. She taught elementary school in Greenville, SC and also in Cocke County. She later worked at National Bank in Newport, TN where she managed the bookkeeping department for many years. Elayne was an avid reader, a history buff and a lifelong learner. She was an incredible and generous hostess to family and friends alike, and was well known to the friends of her son as making the best sweet tea in East Tennessee. In retirement, Elayne enjoyed many happy hours at home and at ballgames with her grandsons. Elayne, known as 'Grandmom' to her grandsons, was a faithful Christian and an outstanding wife, mother and grandmother. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Elayne was preceded in death by three sisters: Eula Laws Templin, Ella Laws Jordan, and Enid Laws Fish; and one brother, Don Laws. Elayne was a member of Central Church of Christ and had earlier been a member of Morristown Church of Christ. Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Johnny Howard Trent; one son, Steven Howard Trent and his wife, Carol Adams Trent; two grandsons, Andrew Steven Trent and John Adams Trent; and several nieces and nephews. The family of Elayne Laws Trent will receive friends from 5 to 7 PM on Saturday, May 14, 2016, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 7 PM with Tim Hall, Minister of the Central Church of Christ, officiating. The graveside committal service will be conducted at 2 PM, Sunday in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be: Andrew Trent, John Trent, Randall Fish, Cliff Arnwine, Tony Kinsler, and Jake Blevins. Honorary pallbearer will be Ken Lutterman, to whom the Trent family offers a special thank you. Minister, family and friends are requested to meet at the funeral home by 1:15 PM, Sunday, to go in procession to the cemetery. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Central Church of Christ, 2722 East Oakland Ave, Johnson City, Tennessee 37601.
