Eli A. "Tab" Torbett Jr. died at the community living center at Mountain Home, February 12, 2025.
Tab was born in Piney Flats, Tennessee on August 19, 1921, where he grew up working on the family farm and sawmill. He was employed at Bays Mountain as an electrician and during the depression traveled to Baltimore and worked at Bethlehem Fairfield Shipyards. Here he received his draft notice and served in the United States Army during WWII in the 102nd infantry artillery division from 1942-1945 in France then Germany. He received a T-5 medal for his exemplary combat service. When he returned home to Piney Flats, he opened Tri-City Plant Farm where he grew mums, pompoms, and a large variety of vegetable plants and garden flowers until he retired in 1995.
Tab is survived by his daughter Kevyn Elizabeth Torbett. He is preceded in death by his parents Eli A. Torbett Sr. and Mary Etta Fitzgerld Torbett, his wife of 69 years Peggy Torbett, infant son Keith Lawrence Torbett, grandson John F Landers II; sisters Trula Torbett, Bertha King, Inez White, Vena Sanders, and Monte Hale; Brothers Clifford Torbett, Herbert Torbett, Harry Torbett, Farrell Torbett, Lawrence Torbett, and Gene Torbett.
Pallbearers include Byron Barnes, Brad Torbett, Colby Torbett, Richie Torbett, Dean Torbett, Jim Wright, and Dwight King; Honorary Pallbearers include Dickie Torbett, and Don King.
Tab was a member for over 60 years at New Bethel Presbyterian Church. He loved serving his church in any way he could as an Elder and singing in the choir.
The Torbett family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 AM Saturday February 15, 2025, at New Bethel Presbyterian Church, A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM at the Church, and an interment will follow the funeral in New Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Pastor Tom Gamola will officiate.
