Mrs. E. Pocahontas Neale, 95, of 2018 Sherwood Drive, Johnson City, passed away on Monday March 27, 2006 at North Side Hospital. She was a native of Richmond, Virginia, and had lived in Johnson City since 1951. She was the daughter of the late James Malone Edwards and Mary Frances Rush Edwards of Richmond. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John Carlysle Neale, Jr., in December, 1967, and by a daughter, Jean Neale Hill, in August, 1992. Mrs. Neale was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church of Johnson City. A member of The Presbyterian Women and of Circle 5, and later of the Friendship Circle. She was also a member of the Johnson City Symphony Guild, The Monday Club, Women?s Auxiliary to the Washington County Medical Society, The Daughters of the American Revolution, John Sevier Chapter. She served on the Board of the Carroll Reece Museum, and was a former member of the Johnson City Garden Club. Survivors include a son, Dr. Jack C. Neale, III of Johnson City; a daughter, Carolyn Neale Lindsey; a son-in-law, Dr. James E. Lindsey, Jr. both of Richmond; eleven grandchildren, twenty-seven great grandchildren; one great great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. She was born in Buckingham County, Virginia, entered first grade there, but moved to Richmond in time to hear all the Richmond church bells ring at the end of The Great War on November 11, 1918. She attended the Richmond Public Schools, was beauty queen of Richmond in 1928, was married to a young medical student at Medical College of Virginia in 1930, had her first baby in 1932, her second baby in 1934, and her third in 1938. During the WWII era while living in Portsmouth, she and her husband grew flowers commercially as a hobby and were both judges for Garden Clubs, etc. This activity continued when she lived in the Ginter Park neighborhood of Richmond from 1946-1951 before moving to Johnson City. A Memorial Service will be held in the Chapel at the Appalachian Christian Village at 11 AM on Thursday, March 30th, Rev. Don Muncie officiating. Graveside services and burial will be at Lanesville (Virginia) Cemetery, a family cemetery on April 1.
