Ellen Worthy Campbell

Ellen Worthy Campbell, age 88, Johnson City, passed away Wednesday, December 9, 2015, in her residence. She was born in Washington, D.C. and lived her childhood in Saltville, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Eleanor White Worthy and Ray Bonner Worthy. Ellen graduated from Stuart Hall, Staunton, Virginia in 1945 and Wellesley College in 1949. Ellen moved to Johnson City in 1950 when she married Dr. Edward Malcolm Campbell and immediately became an active contributor to her community, both charitably and socially. They joined Watauga Avenue Presbyterian Church, where she was a weekly volunteer and served as an Elder. At the time of her death, she was the longest standing member of the congregation. In other charitable activities, she was elected to the Board of Trustees of Tusculum College from 1976-1982. She also served on the Board of Directors for Dawn of Hope Foundation in the 1980?s. She was also active in the Junior Auxiliary (now called the Junior League-Johnson City, Inc.) where she served a term as the President. Her social activities were also very important to her. She very much enjoyed her weekly game of bridge and all her partners and opponents. Ellen loved books and savored her participation in the Fortnightly Book Club and the Dilettantes Book Club. She helped found a monthly women?s lunch group, FOF, and was very fond of all the other participants. Ellen was one of the early members of Mountain View Garden Club and served as President in 1954. At their 60th anniversary, she was delighted to be acknowledged for her many years of involvement. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Dr. Edward Malcolm Campbell in 2003, her daughter, Eleanor White Campbell, in 1966, and her brother, David Bonner Worthy in 2004. Ellen is survived by many beloved family members including: her brother, Peter Worthy, his wife, Ruthie; her daughter, Louise ?Lecy' Howard Campbell of Johnson City; her four sons and daughter-in laws, Preston White Campbell, III and Elaine Mitchell Campbell of McLean, Virginia, Ray Worthy Campbell and Elaine Claar Campbell of Shenzhen, China, Malcolm McDonald Campbell and Charlene Schulz of City Island, New York, and Volney Howard Campbell and Jeanne Randon Campbell of Austin, Texas; her niece and nephew-in-law, Katherine Worthy Grizzanti and Dr. Joseph Grizzanti of Warwick, New York; eleven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The family of Ellen Worthy Campbell will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM Monday, December 14, 2015 at the Watauga Avenue Presbyterian Church. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 PM in the church sanctuary. Rev. Patricia Locke and Rev. Maggie Palmer Lauterer will officiate. In lieu of flowers, Ellen requested that memorial contributions be given to Watauga Avenue Presbyterian Church, 610 E Watauga Avenue, Johnson City, TN 37601.
