Command Master Chief (Retired) Jim and Anne Williams Garland of 156 Spice Hollow Road, Johnson City, died Sunday, December 20, 2009 at their residence. Jim was a native of Washington County, son of the late Elmer E. and Ruby Britt Garland. Anne was a native of Unicoi County, daughter of the late Roy William and Stella Stamper Williams. Jim was a veteran, having served for 32 years in the U. S. Navy. Following his service, he and Anne formed and operated their own company, A & J Cutrite Upholstry. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Garland, survived by his wife Patsy Garland. In addition to her parents, Anne was preceded in death by a brother, Arvil Williams and two sisters, Betty Bowman and Emily Rutter. They were accompanied in death by their beloved dog, Princess.Survivors include their four children: Tony and his wife Anita Garland of Johnson City, Jamie and her husband James Thigpen of Chuckey, Darrell Garland and his partner, Brian Johnson of Seymour, Kevin and his wife Rhonda Garland of Johnson City; their three grandchildren, Tiffany and James Thigpen and Caleb Garland; Anne has a surviving sister, Juanita Simmons of Erwin; Jim has four brothers and a sister surviving, Harold Garland of Texas, Bob Garland of Virginia, Guy and Joe Garland both of Johnson City, Mary Ruth Smith of Johnson City; there are also several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. from the Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church, under the direction of Rev. Paul Crowe. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until time of services at 7:00 p.m. A committal service is scheduled for Thursday, December 24, 2009 at the Roselawn Memorial Gardens at 10:00 a.m. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the Morris '' Baker Funeral Home to leave in procession by 9:30 a.m.
