Evelyn H. Shook, age 86, of Elizabethton, died Monday, May 27, 2013 at the residence of her daughter, Karen, 719 Quail Hollow Road, Elizabethton, TN. She was a native of Mitchell County, NC, who had lived most of her life in the Elizabethton area. She was the daughter of the late Pearson and Flora Whitson Hughes. Mrs. Shook was a member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church for over sixty years and a member of the Ambassador for Christ Sunday School class. She was a proud graduate of Happy Valley High School. Mrs. Shook retired as office manager with J.C. Penney Co. after serving the company for over forty years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul J. Shook, and three brothers, Ralph, Bruce, and Jim Hughes. Survivors include: her daughter, Karen Austin, and her husband Greg, Elizabethton; two granddaughters, April McSpadden, and her husband, J.T., Johnson City, and Chelsey Austin, Elizabethton; great grandson, Quintin McSpadden, Johnson City; two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Hughes, Johnson City, and Betty Hughes, Chattanooga; niece, Teresa Stribbling, Johnson City; and nephew, Robert Hughes, Chattanooga. The family of Evelyn H. Shook will receive friends from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at Morris-Baker Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Karen Austin, 719 Quail Hollow Road, Elizabethton, TN. Graveside services will be conducted 12:30 PM Thursday from the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Pastor Keith Weatherly will officiate. Pallbearers will be: Robert Hughes, J. T. McSpadden, Peyton Wood, Tony Young, David Horton, Willie Horton, and Mark Stribbling. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery for those services. The family extends a special thanks to Dr. Patrick MacMillan, nurses Carol and Jane, and hospice nurse Melinda for their care of Mrs. Hughes.
