Evelyn M. Cantor, retired Tennessee Department of Human Services social worker, formerly of Johnson City, died August 23, 2015, at Capitol Lakes retirement community in Madison, Wisconsin. She was 94. She is survived by two daughters, Susanna Cantor and husband David Caldwell of Raleigh, NC, and Abigail F. Cantor and husband Dr. Alan Kalker of Madison, WI. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard H. Cantor, and her daughter, Judith Cantor; five brothers; a sister; and her parents. Mrs. Cantor was born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1921 and lived with her parents and siblings until she married. Mrs. Cantor came to Johnson City in 1947, where, on a blind date at Thanksgiving, she met her future husband. They were married just after Christmas that year and enjoyed 61 years together before Mr. Cantor?s death in 2008. They had three children. After the children were grown, Mrs. Cantor returned to college where she earned a bachelor of social welfare degree from East Tennessee State University in 1976. She worked for the Tennessee Department of Human Services from 1977 to 1990. While in Johnson City, Mrs. Cantor was active in a variety of social service and community organizations. In particular, she was president of the B?nai Sholom Sisterhood, a member of the board of directors for the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra, a lay member of the Institutional Review Board of Johnson City Medical Center Hospital and a member of the Board of Directors of the Title IV Homemaker Program. Mrs. Cantor and her husband moved to Raleigh in 2005; she then moved to Madison after Mr. Cantor?s death. The family wishes to thank the expert staff at Capitol Lakes, Agrace HospiceCare and Senior Helpers of Madison for their diligent care of Mrs. Cantor. The graveside service for Mrs. Cantor will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 28, at the B?nai Sholom cemetery in Bristol, VA with Rabbi Arthur Rutberg officiating. Family and friends will meet at the cemetery for the service.
