Florence Smythe

September 17, 1905 — November 26, 2007

Florence Browder Smythe, 102, of 2020 Sherwood Drive, Johnson City died Monday, November 26, 2007 at the Appalachian Christian Village. Mrs. Smythe was a native and lifelong resident of Johnson City and a daughter of the late Samuel and Elizabeth Patterson Browder. She was a very active member of the St. Johns Episcopal Church. Mrs. Smythe had also been as a member of the first Girl Scout Troop in Johnson City, served on the Board of Directors of the Girls Club, a twenty year volunteer as a Gray Lady for the Red Cross at the Veterans Hospital at Mountain Home, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, and was recognized with a Tennessee Volunteer Award in the year of 2000. She is preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, F.B. Smythe in 1990; and a daughter, Bettie Andrews. Mrs. Smythe is survived and will be greatly missed by: her daughter Beverly Jackson of Johnson City; six grandchildren, Susan Wilson and her husband David of Senatohia, MS, Ann Screnzel and her husband Steven of Snow Camp, NC, Senter Jackson and his wife Marie of Jonesborough, TN, Beverly Anders and her husband Keith of Johnson City, Carol Burleson and her husband Gary of Johnson City, and Robert Andrews of Nashville, TN; eight great grandsons; and two great, great grandchildren also survive. The funeral service for Florence Browder Smythe will be conducted at 1 PM Friday, November 30, 2007 in the St. Johns Episcopal Church. Father Hal Hutchison will officiate. Interment will follow in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active Pallbearers will be Keith Anders, Gary Burleson, Senter Jackson, Steven Screnzel, Chris Anders, Ben Anders, Elliott Anders, and Robert Andrews. Memorial gifts in memory of Mrs. Smythe may be sent to St. Johns Episcopal Church Building Fund, 500 North Roan Street, Johnson City, TN 37604 There will be no visitation. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to all the caregivers at Appalachian Christian Village for their loving attention, care and concern for Mrs. Smythe.
