Dr. Floyd H. Edwards, age 83, passed away following a lingering illness on Friday, July 15th at his residence. He was a native of Mitchell County, NC and the son of the late Burnie and Sindia Edwards. He was also preceded in death by a brother Wendell Edwards. Dr. Edwards, A Professor Emeritus in the College of Education at East Tennessee State University, earned a B. S. from North Carolina State University, an M. A. from ETSU and a doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served as a teacher and principal in North Carolina Public Schools prior to tenure at ETSU. His service at ETSU included teaching and serving as Associate and Acting Dean in the College of Education. In addition, he directed an Individuality Guided Program, a principals Preparation Program and served as Higher Education Consultant for the Tennessee School Superintendents Advisory. Dr. Edwards was involved in the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and served as chairman of over two hundred evaluations in the U. S. as well as South and Central America. After retirement, Dr. Edwards served as President of both the Washington County Retired Teachers Association and the Tennessee Retired Teacher Association. He was a loyal member of First Church of The Brethren of Johnson City. Survivors include his wife Betty; a daughter, Elizabeth and husband Alvin Sells; two sons, Harold and wife Redith Edwards; Dwight and wife Kim Edwards. One brother, Clinton Edwards; four grandchildren; Lance and Cara Sells; Tonia Brownlee and Samantha Hess; four great granddaughters; a special cousin Dr. Ronald and Delores Edwards; two sisters-in-law; Janice Fine and Mary Nell Edwards, and many special friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 pm Sunday, July17, 2011 from the Morris Baker South Chapel with Bo Deaton and Rufus Smith, ministers officiating. Burial will be held in the Roselawn Memorial Park at 11:00 am Monday. A procession will leave the funeral home for the cemetery at 10:30 am on Monday. In lieu of flowers donations may be made tithe First Church of the Brethren, or toAmedysis Hospice. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 until 8:00 pm Sunday.
