Fred Carol Pickel

June 13, 1943 — January 15, 2014

Fred Carol Pickel, age 70, of Johnson City, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 in the Johnson City Medical Center, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Fred loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He also loved playing the piano and spending time with his kids and grandkids. Mr. Pickel was a lifelong resident of Johnson City and was the son of the late Monnie Gobble Pickel and Blaine Pickel. In addition to his parents, his wife of 43 years, Patti Pickel, and his sister, Charlotte Dean also preceded him in death. He was a member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church, where he played the piano for many years. He was a faithful member of the Will Mosley Sunday School Class. Fred graduated from University Training School and East Tennessee State University. He previously worked at Bridge Computer Systems and Saratoga Technologies as a computer programmer. Survivors include: three children, Kim Pickel, Eric Pickel and his wife Courtney, and Deanna Barnett and her husband Samuel, all of Johnson City; four grandchildren, Brittany Hughes, Garrett Barnett, Andrew Barnett, and Madison Barnett; three brothers, George and his wife Pat, Leroy and his wife Mildred, and Jimmy Pickel and his wife Jean; two sisters, Delores Thornberry and her husband Bob and Janice Burgess and her husband Jim; one brother-in-law, Gary Peterson and his wife Emily; one sister-in-law, Dottie Tipton and her husband Carroll; and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. Tom Johnson and Kim Pratt, GNP for their great care and compassion for Fred. The family of Mr. Fred Pickel will receive friends from 4 to 7 PM Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Sinking Creek Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 7 PM. Rev. Reece Harris will officiate. The committal service will be conducted at 2 PM Sunday in the Roselawn Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Will Mosley Sunday School Class from Sinking Creek Baptist Church. Minister, family, and friends are requested to meet at Morris-Baker Funeral Home by 1 PM Sunday to go in procession to the cemetery.
