Fred Chambers Holloway

Holloway, 80, Johnson City, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2014, after a brief illness. Fred C. Holloway was born September 30, 1933 in Piney Flats, TN to Lucille Harvey Holloway and James Oscar Holloway. He was a graduate of Mary Hughes High School, where he excelled in basketball and baseball. He graduated from East Tennessee State University in 1957 with a BS degree in business. For 42 years, he worked at Giant Wholesale Grocery Corporation. He had worked at every position in the company. He served Giant Wholesale as Executive Vice-President and General Manager, and later retired from Fleming Food Company. He was a former President of the Tennessee Wholesale Grocers Association. Mr. Holloway also served as President of the Young Executives Division of the United States Wholesale Grocer Association. After USWGA merged with another food group, they became the National Association of Wholesale Grocers. Mr. Holloway served four years on the NAWGA board of directors and made numerous presentations over the years at various national conferences and conventions. He served one year as Vice-President of the Tennessee Wholesale Grocers Association and one year as President. Mr. Holloway traveled to many destinations with the food industry and with customers, including: London, England; Rome and Venice, Italy; and the Northwest Territory. He played a lot of golf during his working years. Mr. Holloway was a former member of the Downtown Optimist Club and the Piney Flats Ruritan Club. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Johnson City since the late 1960s, where he had served on the Board of Deacons. He was also a member of the Gideons International Johnson City South Camp. Mr. Holloway was a master craftsman, building and repairing furniture for family and friends. Woodworking was his hobby after retirement in 1996. Beyond all things he was fortunate enough to be involved, he loved God and his family the most. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Ruth Stilwell. He is survived by: a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Scott Gentry, a son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Paula Holloway; three grandchildren, Meredith, Elizabeth, and Brayden Gentry; two step-grandchildren, Caitlin and Bradley Gothard; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Margie Holloway; Anne Frazier, a special sister-in-law; Harriet Luster, a very special friend; and several nieces and nephews. The family of Mr. Fred C. Holloway will receive friends from 5 PM until 7 PM Thursday, July 31, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church. The funeral service will follow at 7 PM Thursday under the direction of Rev. Louis Imsande. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Pairs and Spares Sunday School class. The committal service is scheduled for 11 AM Friday, August 1, 2014 in the New Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Piney Flats. Minister, family, and friends are requested to meet at the cemetery by 10:50 AM Friday.
