Fred William Whitlock

August 5, 1917 — January 11, 2006

Fred William Whitlock, 88, went to be in the presence of His Lord on January 11, 2006, following a brief illness at Lakebridge Health Care Center. He was formerly of 2911 Mayfield Drive, Johnson City. Mr. Whitlock proudly served his country for four years during World War II in the European Theatre, in the Army Corps of Engineers and was part of the Invasion Force, landing on Omaha Beach in the first hour, with three additional landings at HR D-Day. Following his military duty, he worked for the Kingsport Press until retiring in 1980. He enjoyed his wonderful 'family' at Southside Baptist Church, gardening and visits with his beloved grandchildren. He shared a certain whit with his grandchildren that they treasured greatly. As a member of Southside Baptist Church, he had served as deacon and Sunday School teacher. In addition to his parents, Tolbert and Lou Emma Pearl Shipley Whitlock, he was preceded in death by two sons, Major Wayne D. Whitlock, USAF and Dr. David W. Whitlock, DDS; a sister-in-law, Zalene Lowe Whitlock of Marysville. Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Dorothy Heck Whitlock of Johnson City; a devoted daughter-in-law, Elaine Whitlock, Johnson City; two grandchildren, Amy Whitlock (& Jason) Martin, Grand Prarie, TX; and Scott (& Emily) Whitlock of Abilene, TX; one sister, Mary Haldine Whitlock, Johnson City; four brothers, Kenneth Whitlock, Marysville, James 'Mack' (& Ethel) Whitlock of Kingsport, Kyle (& Carol) Whitlock, Massillon, OH and Weldon Whitlock, of Johnson City and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, January 14, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at the Southside Baptist Church, under the direction of Rev. John Perkins and Rev. Joel Cook. The family will receive friends from 11:30a.m. until time of service at one. Interment is to follow in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be: Jerry Walker, Luther Livingston, Tom Cox, Darrel Maupin, Zachary Livingston, David Newell and Andrew Whitehouse. Honorary pallbearers will be: Bill Grindstaff, Danny Sharp, Gene Pickering and Joey Chapman. Memorials may be made in the form of contributions to: Southside Baptist Church, 1928 Wheeler Street, Johnson City, TN 37604 (General Fund).
