Gwendolyn Gregory Clanton

March 27, 1929 — June 27, 2019

Gwendolyn Gregory Clanton, 90, went to be with the Lord on June 27, 2019.
She was born to John Frances Gregory and Helen Chandler Gregory on March 27, 1929 in Altavista, Virginia. Gwendolyn graduated from Altavista High School, and later received a degree from Pan American Business School in Richmond, Virginia. She worked as an administrative assistant for General Shale when she first relocated to Johnson City, and later worked for several years in cosmetic sales with Belk Department Store.
Gwendolyn was a faithful member of Central Baptist Church and the Esther Sunday School Class. She served through the years in Vacation Bible School, Sonbeams, and the Loaves and Fishes Ministry. She especially enjoyed working in outreach with the “Go Ministry” writing hand-written notes to church members in times of need and celebration.
Gwendolyn loved spending time with her family – especially her children, grandchildren and grand dogs, and she was looking forward to the arrival of her first great grandson, Harvey James Smith. She also enjoyed her red geraniums, gardening, as well as feeding and watching the birds and other wildlife in her backyard. Gwendolyn always enjoyed going to lunch and visiting with her many friends. She was a real lady who took pride in her appearance by always dressing nicely and having makeup and hair done.
Gwendolyn was gracious, hospitable and consistently thought of others above herself. She had a positive attitude, chose joy in all situations and was a great encourager to her family and friends. She was a blessing to all who knew her and will be greatly missed.
She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Helen Gregory; a brother, Kenneth Gregory; and her husband of 58 years, Paige Harvey Clanton.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Susan Clanton and husband Gregg Simpson; son, Ashby Clanton and wife Connie Clanton; granddaughters, Lauren Clanton-Smith and husband Greg Smith, Katie Simpson and husband Andrew Moore; and grandson, Nicholas Clanton and wife Hannah Clanton.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at Princeton Transitional Care, Amedisys Hospice, Johnson City Internal Medicine, and the wonderful nurses on the 2400 wing of JCMC who provided care and comfort.
The family of Gwendolyn Clanton will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m on Monday, July 1, 2019, at Central Baptist Church in Johnson City. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 7:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Ron Murray and Minister of Music Tony Martin. There will be a private committal service for the family the following day.
