Harold Wayne Mckee

February 29, 1924 — June 4, 2014

Harold Wayne McKee, 90, of Johnson City, Tennessee, died Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at Ivy Hall Nursing Home in Elizabethton. He was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County, son of the late Elmer Alexander and Mamie Edmona Treadway McKee. Harold was a member of the Roan Hill Baptist Church and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). He was retired from Smith-Higgins Wholesale Drug Company. He proudly served his country in the U. S. Army from 1943 to 1945 with the 469th Antiaircraft Division and was attached to the 1st Marines on four major invasions. His tour of duty took him to Bismark-Archiplago, New Guinea, the southern Philippines, and Luzon. During his years with the Army, Mr. McKee received the World War II Victory ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, AP Theater Ribbon with four bronze stars and one bronze arrowhead, two addition bronze stars, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. Three brothers, Dana, V.A. and Ben McKee and one sister, Una Maupin, preceded him in death. Survivors include his beloved wife of 67 years, Betty Jo Hensley McKee of Johnson City; three sons, Harold Richard McKee and wife Patsy of Winter Garden, FL, Michael Wayne McKee and spouse John Snead of San Francisco, CA, and Dwight Douglas McKee and significant other Teresa Gray of Jonesborough; a daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Dennis Kilby of Jonesborough; two grandchildren, Angela Sue West of Winter Garden, FL and Dennis Wayne Kilby of Jonesborough; three great grandchildren, Caden, Colin, and Makinze Reese West all of FL; several cousins and friends along with a special family friend and caregiver, Karen Conero. In lieu of flowers, family has requested that memorial contributions be made to either DAV c/o Keith Jones, 409 E. Market St., Johnson City, TN 37601-4829 or the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, 1035 Market Street,#400, San Francisco, CA 94103 or The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, c/o Derrick Lee Reback, Lee and Co. Inc., 12400 Wilshire Boulevard, Suite 1275, Los Angeles, CA 90025. A graveside service will be conducted on Monday, June 9, 2014 at 10:45am at Mountain Home National Cemetery under the direction of Rev. Mike Richards. Military honors will be accorded by the Boone Dam VFW and the Tennessee National Guard.
