Harold W. DeBord, age 65, 4102 Brookmyra Drive, Orlando, Florida 32837, died February 24, 2009. Mr. DeBord was a native of Johnson City, Tennessee, and lived there for fifty-three years. He moved to Orlando, Florida, in July of 1999. He was a son of Almer and Lucille Webb DeBord. He was a teacher and Principal in the Johnson City, TN, Public School System for thirty years. He also taught one year in Indiatlantic, Fl, and two years in DeKalb Co., Ga. He taught at Henry Johnson and Cherokee Elementary Schools, and Liberty Bell Middle School. He served as a principal for eight years at Henry Johnson, and as assistant-principal and principal of Liberty Bell Middle School. Mr. DeBord served as assistant-principal for one year during the opening of Indian Trail Middle School. He retired from public school work in June of 1999. After three and a half decades and hundreds of children and parents his influence and love will long be felt and remembered. After retirement he moved to Orlando, Florida, and worked for seventeen months, full time at Walt Disney World. In January 2001 he worked part-time at WDW and served for four years with the Orange County public schools as a substitute teacher in pre-k to fifth grades. He received his B.S. Degree in elementary education in 1966, and his M.A. Degree in Elementary Education and Administration in 1973 from East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, TN. Mr. DeBord was a member of the TN. Education Association, National Education Association, and Johnson City Education Association, Tennessee Association of Middle Schools and Kappa Delta Pi and Phi Delta Kappa. During his career, he had received both local and state recognition for his service to children. Mr. DeBord was a former member of Central Church of Christ in Johnson City, and has been an active member of Kissimmee Church of Christ, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents, Almer and Lucille; one brother Glenn. He is survived by one sister, Carolyn Faye DeBord Smith, of Kingsport TN; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation for family and friends will be Saturday, February 28, 2009, from 12:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. with the funeral services following from the chapel at Morris Baker South Chapel with Tim Hall, minister of Central Church of Christ, officiating. Graveside committal service will be held at Monte Vista Burial Park, Johnson City, TN. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be sent to Kissimmee Church of Christ library fund, 921 West Vine St., Kissimmee, Florida 34741.
