Mr. Harry M. Cook, Jr., 96, 1322 Lynwood Drive, Johnson City passed away Sunday, November 29, 2009 in the Johnson City Medical Center. Mr. Cook was a lifelong resident of Johnson City. He was the son of the late Harry M. Cook, Sr. and Grace Dupree Cook. In addition to his parents three half sisters and one half brother also preceded him in death. Mr. Cook was born March 19, 1913, at his parents home at the corner of West Watauga Avenue and West Main Street, Cooks first home was torn down to make way for the former West Side School the site of todays Watauga Square Apartments. Mr. Cook started working at the age of 15 years old. He once said, ' I dont know what I would do without work. I think I would be bored.'? Mr. Cook retired from ET&WNC Transportation Co. He was a longtime treasurer at First United Methodist Church were both he and his wife were members. Counting Sundays, he was at the church five days a week. Former pastor Rev. John Toney once said,'? He pays all our bills. He keeps up with our payroll, Social Security and IRS things. He keeps track of our budget, appropriations receipts, year-end giving statements for tax purposes. It was as if he was the treasurer of a large company. He was a past Boy Scout leader with Troop #36 at First United Methodist Church. Mr. Cooks secret for such productive longevity was youve got to have a sense of humor and youve got to not worry about a whole lot of things, theyll work out. Mr. Cook was a thirty-year member of the Johnson City Lions Club were he had served as president. He was presented the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award the highest honor conferred by Lions Club International. Survivors include: his wife of sixty-nine years, Nora Puckett Cook of the home; three sons, Finley Cook and his wife Judy of Johnson City, Harry F. Cook and his wife Grace of Johnson City and Criss Cook and his wife Marti of Johnson City; six grandchildren, Brian Cook and his wife Nancy of Johnson City, Kathy Huff and her husband Scott of Gray, Curtis Cook of Johnson City, Kelly Gomes and her husband Albert of Matthews, North Carolina, Allison Cook of New York, Ashley Cook of Newport, Tenn. and Dustin Wilson of Johnson City; seven great grandchildren. The family request that memorial contributions be made to the First United Methodist Church Boy Scouts or the Promise Land fund. A memorial service will be conducted at 7 PM Tuesday, December 1, 2009 in the First United Methodist Church. Rev. Garland Thayer, Rev. Tim Bracken and Rev. Bill Carter will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 PM prior to the service at the church.
