Helen Louise Stump Holyfield

October 28, 1917 — October 24, 2017

Helen Louise Stump Holyfield, 99, of Flag Pond, TN passed away on October 24, 2017 at Sycamore Shoals Medical Center in Elizabethton, TN. She was born in Johnson City, TN daughter of the late Charles H. and Ella Young Stump.

In addition to her parents, her husband, Charles Oberlin Holyfield, her daughter, Judy Holyfield Landis and a great granddaughter, Violet Faith Doto, preceded her in death.
Helen grew up and spent most of her life in Johnson City. She was a graduate of Science Hill High School.
She then raised her children and worked as a clerk in the Washington County Clerk?s Office for ten years.
Helen enjoyed playing bridge, was an avid golfer and in later years enjoyed watching the game on TV. Reading was also a passion.
She was active in the work of the First United Methodist Church of Johnson City and taught in their Senior High Department while her husband was the church?s Sunday School Superintendent. After his passing, she remained active in the church?s Susanna Wesley Class. After moving to Flag Pond, she no longer attended, but she remained interested in the class activities and treasured the friendships she had formed there.
Helen was a devoted wife of Charlie and proud mother of her son, Chuck and his wife, Valda Cosby Holyfield of Flag Pond, TN; her daughter, Kay, and her husband, Fred Morefield of Virginia Beach, VA. She also loved her grandchildren and their spouses; Kerry and Erik Williamson of Waxhaw, NC; Josh and Meghan Doto of Virginia Beach, VA; Tricia and John Lane of Raleigh, NC; and Stacie and Eric Saunders of Boone, NC. She was especially proud of her great-grandchildren, Sander, Halen, Ella and Lydia Williamson, Charlie and Eli Lane, Luke and Wren Saunders, Ethan and Charlotte Doto.
Helen lived during the terms of 18 presidents as well as the Great Depression. She was always thankful for life?s blessings, not the least of which were her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was a gracious lady with charm and finesse. Her advice to anyone was to ?Live one day at a time and be grateful'.
Donations in her memory are requested for the First United Methodist Church of Johnson City, 900 Spring Street, Johnson City, TN 37604.
A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, October 29, 2017 at 2:00 pm under the direction of Rev. Jane Taylor at the First United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until time of service at 2:00 pm.
