Mr. Herbert ?Waymon' Mumpower, 86, Johnson City, passed away on Friday, September 18, 2015 at Christian Care Center of Johnson City. Mr. Mumpower was an Appalachia, VA native and son of the late Charles B and Agnes Mumpower. He was born on December 8, 1928. Mr. Mumpower graduated from Appalachia, VA High School and attended East Tennessee State University. He was a founding father of Pi Kappa Alpha at ETSU. While working as a telegraph operator for Southern Railway, he was drafted into the Army and served in the 51st Signal Battalion for two years. He fought in the Korean War on the front lines. He received two Bronze Stars, a Korean Service Medal and a United Nations Service Medal during his military service. He returned home and continued to work for Southern Railway and retired after 46 years. Mr. Mumpower was a member of Appalachian Methodist Church, and attended Cherokee Church of Christ. He was the past president of the Lion?s Club and a member of Old Timers Hiking Club. His favorite pastimes were hiking, hunting, scuba diving and working on the Appalachian Trail. Survivors include: his wife of 53 years, Barbara Gaye Harvey; two sons, Kenneth Todd Mumpower, and his wife Tracey, and Lance Edward Mumpower, and his wife Dianna; two daughters, Sherri Lynn, and her husband Artie Blakley, and Kimberly Gaye, and her husband Adam Hogston; two granddaughters, Kaleia Godsey and Kinley Hogston; five brothers, Thevanow, Eldon ?Ed', and his wife Dorothy, Gale, and his wife Peggy, Harry, and his wife Carolyn, and Charles, and his wife Linda; one sister, Eureka, and her husband Don Lee; several nieces and nephews. The family of Herbert ?Waymon' Mumpower will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM Tuesday, September 22, 2015 at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 12:00 PM. Family and friends will leave at 1:15 PM in procession to Mountain Home National Cemetery for 1:45 PM graveside services. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Old Timers Hiking Club at www.oldtimershikingclub.weebly.com or the Lion?s Club.
