Horace Monroe Lloyd

Well done, good and faithful servant. Matthew 25:23 Horace Monroe Lloyd, age 95, of Johnson City, passed into heaven Thursday afternoon, October 18, 2012 at Christian Care Center of Johnson City. He was a native of Worthington, Indiana, born August 18, 1918. He came to Johnson City at a very young age where he spent his entire life. He served in the US Navy, World War II in the South Pacific, Guadalcanal from 1943 - 1945. He was faithfully married to the former Jessie Inez Hilton for 67 years, who passed away December 4, 2008, Together they were parents of three children, Sharon Lloyd Willingham, Johnson City; Dwight Monroe Lloyd, San Antonio TX; and Rodney Keith Lloyd (Nita Billings Lloyd), Johannesburg, South Africa. They had six grandchildren, Amy Willingham, Johnson City; Minda Lloyd Nichols (Paul), Johannesburg, South Africa; Michael Lloyd (Jill), Los Angeles, CA; Jason Lloyd, San Antonio, TX; Jennifer Lloyd, San Antonio, TX; James Lloyd, San Antonio TX. There are also four great grandchildren. He was a devoted Christian his entire adult life and had previously been a member of Central Baptist Church, Johnson City, for many years and was presently a member of Cornerstone Church, Johnson City, where he had been an active member for more than 35 years. Up until the past four months, he was seen every Sunday at the door at Cornerstone Church waiting to shake hands and greet every person who came in, with that famous handshake of his. In earlier years, he had been faithful in a Jail Ministry for 20 years, where he went to area jails to share the Good News. Many lives were touched and many more became Christians. He retired from Johnson City Press in 1982 after 35 years of service. He was an avid tennis player and had played for many years with his group of tennis buddies. The family wishes to express sincere thanks to the dedicated and caring staff of Christian Care Center of Johnson City. The family of Horace Lloyd will receive friends Thursday from 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM at Morris-Baker. A Celebration of his life 'well lived' will follow at 1:00 PM in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. His son, Rodney Lloyd, will officiate. Following the funeral service, family and friends will proceed to Monte Vista Memorial Park for graveside services. Military honors will be provided by Boone Dam VFW and the Tennessee National Guard. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee, P O Box 3327, Johnson City, TN 37602-3327.
