Mr. Howard Hicks 'Red Eye'? Holmes, 84, 1602 Boones Creek Road, Johnson City died peacefully at his home with his family. Mr. Holmes was a native of Jonesborough. He was born May 21, 1924.He was one of eight children of the late Albert Jackson and Ethel A. Hicks Holmes. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Ed, Gordon and Clyde Holmes; three sisters, Alberta H. Purdy, Mary Frank H. Smalley and Christine H. Sprinkle, as well as two nephews. Mr. Holmes was a 1942 graduate of Jonesborough High School and attended East Tennessee State College. He served in the U.S. Navy and spent time in Texas, California and New Guinea. He went to work March 1945 for the Tennessee Valley Authority. He retired from T.V.A after forty-seven years of service. For many of those years he served as Assistant Superintendent of Power Construction in the Eastern Division. Mr. Holmes was a long time member of the Central Baptist Church of Johnson City and the William Rigell Sunday School Class. Survivors include: his wife of fifty-four years Marie Hawk Holmes of Jonesborough; children and spouses, Stephen Holmes and his wife, 'special daughter'? Brenda of the home, Lisa Holmes Kleven and her husband, Jeffrey of Johnson City and Luther Holmes and his wife, Collette of Georgia, 'Poppys'? eight grandchildren, Chelsea, Michael, Matthew, Kathryn, Ashley, Tristen, Maliah and Sheridan; one sister, Anne H. Walls of Johnson City; a host of nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Howard Hicks 'Red Eye'? Holmes will be conducted at 7 PM Saturday February 21, 2009 in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Rev. R. Willard Warfield will officiate. Special music will be provided by Sal Cicerillo. The committal service will be conducted at 2 PM Sunday in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be nephews: Tom, Danny, John, Gordon, Alan, and Jim Holmes and Gordon Walls. Honorary pallbearers will be: members of Heaven Saints Motorcycle Ministries. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home at 1:30 PM Sunday to go in procession to the cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Heaven Saints Motorcycle Ministeries, (HSMM) C/O Wanda Rhudy, 199 Hillcrest Circle, Jonesborough, TN 37659. The family will receive friends in the funeral chapel from 5 to 7 PM Saturday prior to the service. Special thanks to Caris Healthcare and very special friends Bill and Inez Warfield.
