Howard Lloyd King, 92, of Piney Flats, passed away on Saturday, September 3, 2011 at the V.A. Medical Center at Mountain Home.He was a native of Washington County and life long resident of Sullivan County. He was a son of the late Carl Alexander King and Mary Faye Rutledge King. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Agnes Snapp King and by one brother, Horace King, one sister, Ora Mason and two brothers-in- law, Dr. Dan Espey and Fred Mason. Mr. King was an elder and life long member of New Bethel Presbyterian Church. During World War II he served as a Staff Sergeant in the 740th Field Artillery Battalion. He was present during 5 campaigns, including the D-Day landings and the Battle of the Ardennes. He was a Finish Carpenter with Burwil Construction Company in Bristol, TN and a farmer who raised Black Angus cattle. He was an active member of the Sullivan County Livestock Association and the Tennessee Cattlemens Association. Mr. King loved gardening, woodworking and was an avid weather watcher. Survivors include; one daughter, Claudia Church and her husband Mickey of Columbia, SC; one son, Dwight King and his wife Pam of Piney Flats; two sisters, Martha Espey of Hickory, NC and Betty Ottenfeld and her husband Neil of Colonial Heights; one sister-in- law, Ann King of Rustburg, VA; two Grandchildren, Matt Church and his wife Jennie of Charleston, SC and Kara Grant and her husband Nathan of Lexington , SC; one Great Grandson, Campbell Church; many special nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a special thank you for all caregivers from the Mountain Home VAs Home Based Primary Care. Also, all the employees at the VAs Community Living Center who became Howards extended family and gave him such special care during his final stage of life on this earth. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 pm Monday, September 5, 2011 from Morris-Baker South Chapel. Dr. Angus Shaw and Dr. Andrew Spence will officiate. Burial services will be held at the Edgefield Cemetery in Piney Flats at 11:00 am Tuesday. A procession will leave the funeral home at 10:30 am on Tuesday for the cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Chuck Arnold, Bill Davis, Clifford Hall, Phil Henson, Steve King, Bud Meyers, Homer Stout and Ed Tester. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 until 7:00 pm on Monday. In lieu of flowers the family requests that you send donations to New Bethel Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 592 New Bethel Road, Piney Flats, TN 37686-4033.
