Iris June Ledford

Iris June Ledford, 97, passed from this life to life eternal, on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at Christian Assisted Living in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Iris was born in Swannanoa, North Carolina into the loving home of James and Jonsie Allen on March 15, 1926. She was the second of eight children. Her great loves were Jesus, her family, and her home on White Oak.

She met and married the love of her life, James Ledford. Together they moved to Bakersville, North Carolina, where they raised their children together until his death in 1976.

Fiercely independent, Iris was deeply involved with her church and community. In her later years, she spent much of her time walking her mountain roads and hills with her walking stick. She was a talented seamstress and always shared her creations with anyone she felt would be blessed by them. Iris loved gardening both vegetables and “her flowers”. When asked the question “What has she done today?” by her children, the common response would often be “I wasted the day digging in the dirt.”

Along with her parents, Iris is preceded in death by: her husband, James Ledford; and six of her seven siblings.

Those remaining to cherish her memory are: her children, Jimmy (Cynthia) Ledford, Kim (Wayne) Mulling, and Cindy (Glenn) Howe; one sister, Patti Barnett; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A visitation for family and friends is scheduled for 11:30 AM to 12:00 PM on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at White Oak Baptist Church in Bakersville. The funeral service will begin at 12:00 PM and will be officiated by Mr. Wayne Mulling.

The committal service will commence at 1:00 PM on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at Wison Cemetery in Bakersville. Those wishing to attend are asked to arrive by 12:50 PM.
