Jack Harlan Carpenter, 66, of Johnson City, died Thursday, September 8, 2011 at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was a native of Johnson City, son of the late Jack and Betty Brien Carpenter. Jack was a veteran of Vietnam, having served in the U. S. Army. He was an Attorney; he served as counsel for East Tennessee State University, with District Attorneys office and as a Public Defender. His later years he worked his private practice. Jack was of the Baptist faith. He was member of Lamda Chi Alpha and the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association. In addition to his parents, a daughter, Erika Carpenter in 1998, preceded him in death. Survivors include: his wife, Jean B. Carpenter of the home; three sons, David Carpenter and his wife, Jamie of Petersburg, VA, Jeremiah Carpenter and Jacob Carpenter both of the home; two daughters, Crystal Carpenter of Texas and Rachael Carpenter of the home; two grandchildren, Nathan and Micah Carpenter both of Petersburg, VA; several nieces and nephews. A funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, September 17, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. in the South Chapel of the Morris '? Baker Funeral Home under the direction of Dr. Bill Shanks. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until time of service at 1:30 p.m. Military Honors are to be accorded by: the Boone Dam VFW and the Tennessee National Guard.
